I keep asking Ava Scarlett what she wants for Christmas… kids at this young an age tend to change their minds. A lot.
So, besides ballet things, and Calico Critters, today she gave me a new item for her list.
Me: So, what would you like for Christmas, again?
She: Well, I think I’d liiiiiiike… some Nutella.
Me: Pardon?
She: Nutella. I want some for my own self.
Me: You mean, you’d like your own jar of Nutella?
She: Yes.
Me: Really?!
She: *solemnly* Yes. Please.
Me: Well, okay then! I hope Santa doesn’t forget!
She: Don’t worry, I will share mine with Oliver, but I can’t share it with daddy, because it has flour. *big, unblinking eyes*
Martin has been excluding gluten from his diet for over a year now. Besides being a huge pain in the ass for me, this child is constantly wondering what she can and cannot share with him, which is completely adorable.
Me: Nutella has flour? I don’t think it does…
(Actually, I should check – just about everything everything has traces of wheat flour in it someplace… ack.)
She: Yes. *nodding*
Me: I really don’t think so, baby.
She: Yes! It has flour and coconuts and basil.
Me: Whaaaat? What do you mean exaclty?
She is crazy. I get a nearly-empty jar from the cupboard. I read the label.
She: Yes! See? See the label… see?
Then, I look at the picture…
Well. I stand corrected: flower, coconuts and basil. Just like the child said. (I didn’t have the heart to correct her… it’s all just too damned cute!)
I suppose I’ll have to get to the grocery store this week…
Endnote: As it turns out, Nutella is without wheat products. Joy to the gluten-free world!

You’re right, Idas – genuine allergy would really be terrible – fortunately, it’s not an allergy, but just a sensitivity. My husband is quite diligent about it though. (He’s cut down on his dairy intake too.) He avoids gluten entirely, so often times, I still make two different dinners for our family… he misses (good) bread and pasta, but he feels better inside his body, so that’s what counts.
Glad you’ve found some foods that work well for you! Must be awful to eat a meal… and then feel awful!
Tracey says
I’m still giggling about it…
NOT giggling about your plight with gluten-free AND dairy-free – I think of you often, woman… I do not envy you. Poor Cuy. Poor YOU!!
I think it will be the little jar – she’s sweet enough as it is! 😉
Tracey says
Isn’t she though? Hee!! She kills me.

I would guess a tough diet might also be anything-free plus a nut or soy allergy.
I really feel for someone who has a genuine gluten and nut or soy allergy. There is lots of gluten-free convenience foods but not as often combined certified-nut free or soy free.
I am near-vegan now and nuts are a very big source of nutrition for me.
I prefer to eat gluten-free despite my Italian genetic LOVE of pasta and breads, my body just doesn’t work well eating high-gluten. I also avoid dairy since my 23 and Me genetic test proved despite my never feeling ill from it, I lack the gene to break it down. Co-incidentally, I have been incredibly resistant to colds and flu since avoiding dairy.
It’s tricky becuase we have lots of nut-allergic neighbours and I really have to scramble to clean up if we have visitors.
By the way, I have learned to make a Philippine dish that is gluten and dairy-free called Bihon noodles. Awesome and flexible and good comfort food too since “cornstarch noodles” can’t be low carb.
I grew up on Nutella like Canadian kids do with peanutbutter. Recently I found Baratti brand hazelnut spread then discovered Slitti brand hazelnut spread, heavenly. Just upping the chocolate nut ante. Mmmm.

What a DOLL she is!! How adorable!
And yes – Nutella is gluten free. But not dairy free.
You want pain in the ass? Go gluten AND dairy free.
…I can’t wait to hear if she gets the big jar or the little jar!!

That is adorable! What a thoughtful and clever girl she is.
