Got Lunch?

September 25, 2013 by Tracey 11 Comments

The other morning, as I was twisting the jar of mayonnaise closed, and capping the mustard, Oliver walked over to the counter where I was making lunch. His face dropped.

He: Ooooh… um, I didn’t really want a ham sandwich for lunch.

Me: *sidelong glance* I’m sorry… you said you don’t want lunch?

He: No, I said I don’t want ham for lunch.

Me: Sorry. *shakes head once* So… you don’t want lunch?

He: No, I said I don’t want haaaam.

Me: *blink*

He: *blink*

Me: *cocks eyebrow*

He: *makes face that says yikes* Um… that’s okay. Ham is fine.

Me: Mmm-hmm…

I mean, really! Punk kid forgot where he lived for a moment.

And lord but I hate it when they act like I serve them anything other than totally delicious food around here. (And given the state of my kitchen these days, he should be so glad that I feed him at all!)  I make a sandwich like a muther, yo. Believe it. Though these days, I’d do anything to trade places with Sara…

Are your kids’ lunchboxes empty at the end of the day? (His was, by the way.)

I just want to gloat for a second here: MY KIDS MAKE THEIR OWN SCHOOL LUNCHES. Yes they do! But this (grade 5 and grade 8) is their first year doing so. I figure it’s time.

And Alice? On the picky eater topic? My girls suddenly don’t like pizza. PIZZA. I ask you… And yes, it totally sucks because I love me some pizza but who can eat the whole thing? *sighsandrollseyestoheaven*

Oh, you deserve to gloat, woman – that is such a wonderful thing! AMAZE!!
Our mornings are just too tight for them (Oliver) to do for himself, just yet – we get up around 6:50 – on the school grounds by 7:50 = YIKES!! I don’t really mind the making of things… just don’t quibble, please.

      And NO PIZZA? *faints*

Mine has decided to be picky, at this late stage. I’m not impressed. I mean, WHO DOESN’T LIKE CHEESE???!!! Ugh. I will admit to catering to it in lunches a tiny bit because otherwise they come home with her and she is small for her age so I worry about her needing food, but at home, she eats what we eat. Period.

I feel you, Alice. I don’t pack anything they don’t actually like… it was just that day, he wasn’t “feeling” the ham. *clutches pearls* I try hard not to cater… we have some dietary issues around here with the mister, but otherwise just. eat. it. Grrrr…

Um, that would be my kid. Unless it’s in homemade mac & cheese (mild cheddar only and not too much) or pizza, she doesn’t do cheese. Or meat in most forms. School lunches are a challenge around here.

Yep, pair that with the ban on peanut butter, and I’m struggling!
