There were two very exciting things at the recent PR event held to launch the new recipes for McCain Deep ‘n Delicious cakes (made with real ingredients that you’d find in your own kitchen)…Tori Spelling and the cake.
I have to admit that my first reaction when I heard that Tori Spelling would be helping McCain introduce the relaunch of the classic and iconic Chocolate, Marble and Vanilla flavours, along with the new Carrot and Apple Caramel varieties, was skepticism. As Canadians we all have stories about enjoying Deep ‘n Delicious cakes. It was the dessert my grandmother used to serve us after Sunday night dinners. Eventually, it became the dessert that my university housemates and I would turn to at our own Sunday night meals.
What on earth did Tori Spelling (aka Donna Martin of Beverly Hills 90210) know about our iconic Canadian cake?
But then I met Tori and spent a little time chatting with her, and that girl knows a thing or two about celebrating with cake.
Over a piece of the new carrot cake variety (which her own son tried to convince her might make an acceptable vegetable serving for dinner), we dished about our kids, special occasions and our love of McCain cakes. Turns out her own favourite way to celebrate everyday is at home with “takeout sushi and reality tv.”
Like many of us, Tori’s idol when it comes to entertaining is Martha Stewart, but she acknowledges that her own personal entertaining style is much less about perfection and more accessible. In her new entertaining book celebraTORI: Unleashing Your Inner Party Planner to Entertain Friends and Family, Spelling says it’s okay to host parties with store-bought foods – and what’s more “celebraTORI” than cake?
She says as a mother she really likes to celebrate the little milestones with her kids; a new tooth, someone learning to ride a bike, the first day of kindergarten. Having a cake in the freezer that can be served in 15 minutes is a great way to celebrate the everyday.
I left the McCain Deep ‘n Delicious launch abandoning my skeptical ways. Tori and I each wolfed down a piece of the carrot cake and gushed about how delicious it was. After dishing over cake, I’m convinced that Tori’s a great spokesperson for the product…she really does seem to celebrate the everyday and want to share that celebration with those around her…just like at my grandmother’s dinner table and my university ghetto house!

i was happy to hear about the ingredient change. although we rarely eat this it’s nice to know that when we do have it for a treat, it’s not as scary as it was! maybe i’ll go get one to celebrate 🙂
