Five Winter Beauty Mishaps And Their Solutions

December 17, 2015 by Tanya Cruz 1 Comment

beauty mishaps, winter beauty, winter skin care

Winter is fast approaching and it’s planning a full blown attack on our beauty regimen. As beautiful as the season can be (it does have its moments…), winter is quite literally the ice cold Queen of all seasons, sucking all the life out of our once sun-kissed skin. The winter elements just aren’t our friends, but with a little planning and preparation, we can avoid all these seasonal beauty mishaps like pros.

Dry flaky skin

The brisk, cold weather has a way of drying out our skin to the point of unforgivable flakiness. And unfortunately, makeup does nothing but make it more noticeable. Since hibernating through the season isn’t an option, the best way to handle this winter beauty mishap is tackling it head on before it even arises. Solution: Continue exfoliating regularly all throughout the winter season using a product with gentle exfoliating beads to help clear away all that dry skin. Also consider using a moisturizing facial mask once a week or incorporating a moisturizing night cream to your end-of-day beauty regimen. For an emergency quick fix, exfoliate the dry patch with a washcloth and apply moisturizer to help maintain hydrated skin throughout the day.

Neglecting your hands

Wearing mittens throughout the winter months does a lot more than keep your hands warm. Constantly exposing your hands to the cold, frigid winter air can lead to painful, cracked skin around your knuckles and can even lead to brittle, peeling nails. Solution: Besides constantly keeping those hands covered up, keep a moisturizing hand cream with you at all times. Reapply throughout the day, especially after handwashing since soaps have a tendency of leaving your skin dry. And to keep your nails beautifully healthy, apply cuticle oil on a weekly basis. Do all this and come your next mani appointment, your hands won’t be in such rough shape!

Smudged, runny makeup

Winters tend to be wet, windy and just plain awful for makeup lovers. Simply walking outside into the sub-zero temperatures can cause your eyes to tear up, ruining that amazing cat eyeliner you just did minutes prior. Let’s face it, having racoon eyes just isn’t a cute look. Solution: Waterproof makeup was made for seasons like this, so it’s time to use it! Just remember to invest in a good makeup remover that will easily break down your makeup, allowing it to come off with one easy wipe. Remember to always set your face with some translucent powder before you hit the road. Not only does it give you a flawless finish but prevents your makeup from rubbing off on your winter clothing.

Wrong lip balm

No one likes broken, chapped lips—which is why lip balms are a winter beauty essential. But be warned, not all balms are made equally. Solution: Avoid all lip balms that include menthol in them. These balms typically leave your lips dry minutes after application. To be safe, try using balms with organic formulas or lip butters to help keep lips soft throughout the day.

Dry, brittle hair

There’s always been talk about protecting your hair from the heat, but come winter time, you’ll need to protect it from the cold too. Without the proper protection, the cold air will simply suck the life out of your locks, leaving them dry and brittle. Solution: Using extra conditioners will help lock in moisture and bring the shine back to your hair again. The best, natural solution for this is coconut oil. Unlike regular conditioners, coconut oil penetrates your hair deeper, allowing it to repair split ends, moisturize your scalp and restore its natural shine; bringing back those luscious locks.
