From My Closet – July 17th, 2012

July 17, 2012 by Urban Closet

A few weeks ago, while running some super-quick errands downtown with the girl-child in tow, high-footing it back to the Metro at 5:40 PM on a Saturday, I passed by one of those mall stores I’d forgotten I liked. There were sales signs in the windows. Of course, the shop would close in 20 minutes, and Madame was chin-deep into an ice cream cone, and I really couldn’t take her into a garment store, sticky as she was, much less try on a bunch of things with now less than 20 minutes until closing time.
So, I straddled the entrance of the shop with one hand on my kid, and the other pointing to all the cool stuff I could spy with my little eye, and asked the salesgirl to find me the appropriate sizes in that thing, and that thing, and that thing over there… any other colours? Okay, cool… that too… yes, thanks. Oh, and what’s your exchange policy, please? Great.
I went home with a bunch of things, knowing I’d likely return more than half of it (which I did) but found some good items for not a lot of monies. You know, how I like to do.
This little pencil skirt is plain black lightweight jersey cotton, three-quarter length, versatile, and washable. Not fancy – just a throw-it-on kind of piece. It was the only one they had left in the store, and it was marked down by half to $12.50. That’s a no-brainer right there.
What I love about it most is the wide turn-down waistband on this thing, like the kind they put on some kinds of sports-gear for tummy-hiding, I guess. It’s not really a problem area of mine, but I really like the option of wearing it unfolded (like in a high-waisted way) which is ideal for pairing with a bunch of tops I have – like this striped one, which is boxy and cropped. I don’t really want my middle section on display that much, thanks, tummy-issues or no. When I raise my arms at all, I’m still covered. Tres 80’s. I feel like Madonna.
The downside of a pencil skirt is they’re too constricting to ride your scooter while wearing one… Boo! Suck!!
