I’m fairly good with my money. I wouldn’t say AH-mazing…but I’m fairly good at not making stupid purchases. I own a home, have savings and am able to provide for my kid. Sidenote – one month at university, I spent my entire February budget on one crazy last weekend of January and literally ate Mr. Noodle for a month…this could be where my ‘good with my money’ thing started.
That being said, I would call myself an impulse memory buyer. Whenever I travel, I like to buy one special thing that reminds me of where I’ve been. I have a ‘little thinker’ statue that I got when I went to Greece that can bring me back there with one glance. I bought a beautiful blue woven shopping bag when I visited my friend Sean in Paris. When I’m carrying it, I can picture the toothless man we saw eating bread while on a river cruise and drinking wine with an Argentine soccer team watching the sun rise over Montmartre.
Having a kid has curbed these travels. I’m on a different journey and memories are made at home. But they’re still being made. And they’re still being immortalized with impulse buys.
A couple of years ago, I bought an awesome painting at an art auction. We go to this auction every year and the most I’ve bought before this was a wine bag. Will asked me the other day why I loved the painting. I said for the colours and because it reminds me of Aunties Jodi, Christie and Molly. Of laughing, drinking wine and being together. The painting was my first and only grown up piece of art that I’ve ever bought. It was too expensive. It was worth every penny.
This weekend? I impulsively bought a hat. An expensive hat. I’ll have it forever and it will always take me back to a sunny Saturday afternoon, listening to The Washboard Union, drinking a beer with my friends in a hat store on Queen Street. Goorin Brothers…check it out..it’s amazing. Nothing crazy happened. It was just one of those awesome days that are a good go to when you’re feeling like ass and thinking you don’t do anything fun anymore. Also truth be told? I felt like a rock star in that hat. And when you’re fast approaching 44…and something can make you feel that good for a couple hours? It was also worth every penny.
So as I get ready to start teaching Will about money, I’m going to add the lesson that sometimes…not ALL the time…sometimes it’s worth it to treat yourself.
What about you? Are you an impulse buyer? Saver? Spender??

that’s the kind of spending that is allowed, i believe. i’m an impulse buyer but i’m also a thinker, too. probably a good thing!
is that a “big it up” hat? i love their stuff. they all fit my giant cranium! and if it is, it’s not expensive, either, it’s a super investment in a quality piece that will last you for a very long time!
