Have you ever had your tarot cards read? I did for the second time on Friday and I loved it.
Let’s back up. Who reads my cards for me? My friend Lori. Twenty years ago, I hopped off a bus in Airlie Beach, Australia. A line of stands were there, representing each area hostel, each manned by a tanned traveler yelling at us to stay at their place. One such yeller had massive Texas-sized hair and a huge smile. In our hungover haze, we picked her. Three months later, we swapped our travel partners and Lori and I headed to the Outback! (this is us with some crazy Germans at the top of Ayers Rock on New Years Day 1989!) We lost touch a few years after we returned but five years ago, magically, we reunited…and it feels so good! (thanks Peaches & Herb!). Seriously, it’s been amazing to know each other as mothers, writers and friends.
A few times a year now, Lori and I get together to stuff our faces full of Serbian food (thanks to her husband’s introduction) and catch up. The last time Lori came, she suggested reading my cards. This time I asked her to. Lori is really getting into all things spiritual and I find it fascinating to learn from her because she’s into the ‘woo woo’ without being all ‘koo koo’ if you get my meaning!
I find the whole thing fascinating. Am I a full believer? I’m not sure but I do think there is a definite connection between lunar cycles, star signs and behaviour. Don’t agree? Try going to an ER or an old folks home on full moons. Seriously.
Anyway, Lori explained that 2012 was the end of one huge spiritual cycle (the Mayans were on to something) and a new one is starting. Endings coupled with new beginnings.
As far as my cards went, it was interesting. I’m not going to get too detailed because some of the cards were really personal AND seemed to jive with some happenings in my life right now. But I’ll share some other findings!
Last time my cards were all focused on my career and this time, they were fully in the romance house. But there was a main theme consistent in both readings.
Swords! So many swords! Both readings, I’ve chosen the Ace of Swords – the strongest card in the deck. It means I’m totally protected and have unlimited strength to draw upon! I love this. But, swords aren’t always the best.
I pulled this card in this reading. And I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It really does signify me.
She has two swords up to protect herself. This chick does not want to be messed with or to be vulnerable. But she’s blindfolded. So she’s protecting herself but from what? She has no idea and no interest in putting herself out there to find out. She doesn’t want to be hurt or take a risk. Very interesting….very.
And this one…
Here she is…surrounded by swords again! But. She’s being taken on a journey from rough waters to smooth waters. AND she’s not in control. Someone else is steering the boat. I can’t remember if it was this card or another but it said that I needed to forget about my ideas about falling in love and how it should happen or will happen and recognize that it ain’t gonna happen the way I think. Really? Let someone else drive the boat? I can’t control others behaviour? Eye opening! Seriously.
*interesting that she has a little kid next to her in the boat…just noticed that…
The biggest thing I took away from my reading was that big things are on the horizon. And I’ve seriously felt like that this year. I’m not sure if it’s job related or love life, but I feel a massive change brewing. Lori also said that I have work to do before I can get there. I need to take more quiet time for myself – away from the phone and the computer – get back to meditating. I’ve already started and I feel like a MILLION bucks. She also said career wise that I need to start thinking outside the box and credit myself for the skills I have. I’ve learned the same from a few people I’ve networked with, so great advice all around. And to find love, I may just need to accept that I can’t control it.
All of this may seem like common sense to you…but when it’s pulled from some random cards in a deck, on a belly full of meat and a glass of red in front of you, it sounds very A-HA!!
Oh and Lori turned me onto a medium…I’m going. She doesn’t live on Long Island..but…
Would you go to a medium?? Have you been??

I used to be really into tarot – I even had my own deck back in University. When it comes to things like tarot and mediums, I don’t think the truth is empirical – I think it comes from within. Sitting there for a while and having someone focus 100% on you while you contemplate what different things might mean and how they apply to you and your life…well, you can’t go wrong whether there is a supernatural force driving it or not.
Nancy says
oh yes. Never was drawn to it until I left my marriage and had the blankest slate I had ever remembered having
it was wild- she told me many truths of the past as I stayed poker faced (this is telling of how in tune she was)
I went 2 more times
I dont live by it but I do find it very cool.
Have to admit I like that image of you being cared for by a strong man. Keep us all posted on all your new beginnings Sara xoxo
