Over the years people have given me very lovely things as a way to show appreciation for my work. Candles, soaps, blankets, books, gift certificates, wine, cookies, homemade treasures, flowers and chocolates fly through my door all year round but especially at Christmas. I am so struck by this ‘extra’.
Recently, I received a letter from a mom whose 4 year old was new to my program. There had been a little hand holding at the beginning and a little bit of accomodating. But nothing big. Really.
The letter came with the full payment of the term. In addtion was a $120 tip – just for being accomodating. Really just for being me.
“X adores the class and thank you for being so supportive of her”
I was so astounded by this over the top generosity, that I put the note in my desk drawer. It winks at me every time I open this drawer. It reminds me that I always want to give the extra and that I look towards a day when I can be over the top in all ways with people I appreciate and love.
In the meantime, in the last several years, I have made a concerted effort to tip really well. An extra $5-15 will not go missing from my life but will make a difference to the person receiving it.

Nancy, I have spent my life defending the TIPS theory to my friends!!! There was a time in my life ( and I was older then then a teen) where my life changed because of the generosity of strangers. Yes by this I mean TIPS!! Yes I was good at my job, but the tips astounded me. This generousity because I did my job well…remarkable. To this day I pay that forward..I have alwasy kept in my head that TIPS stands for “to insure prompt service”!! Keep in mind, if your service is not that good there may be a good reason and just maybe a really good tip, will turn that person around!!
This is true in all areas, if we give our best to others, it will come back to us, maybe just in a smile, a treat, a gift or a “tip”, but please everyone remember….”pay it forward”, it keeps everybody smiling!!!!
