Is there anything more magical than date night? The sitter arrives, you are whisked off in a car to a fancy, romantic restaurant where the children will not be discussed and you can just focus on the magic of your relationship.
Yeah…that doesn’t happen around here either, but it’s good to have goals, right? Even if we do spend half the time talking about the kids, it’s still a good time and it’s important for a relationship. It’s getting there that’s the challenge.
These are the phases of getting ready for date night:
Bath time

After you’ve fished out all the bath toys, it’s your turn to start feeling like a woman again. You turn on some tunes to drown out the sound of World War III erupting over something inconsequential in the playroom. You forgot your iPod is mostly just kids music nowadays and rock out to Raffi because Baby Beluga is your jam anyways.
Makeup

Remember that time you went to Sephora for a few things? It’s time to dust it off. It’s time to make your face up (and take a short break from the little ones that just make faces). Mascara is a basic human right that should not be denied to a mom about to go out on the town.
Doing Your Hair

In the event you don’t have forest creatures to braid your hair, you will probably have to figure out how to do something other than a mom ponytail yourself. Whip your hair back and forth and figure it out (admit it, you sang that in your head.)
Picking an outfit

Everything is too small, out of style, has kid or cat barf on it, dog hair all over it, or is in the wash. What’s a girl to do (except maybe fashion a dress from the curtains a la Scarlett O’Hara, I guess)?? The struggle is so real, and it’s so last season. Never a fairy godmother when you need one. You’re probably only going to Applebee’s or something BUT STILL.
Introducing your kids to the babysitter for the first time

It’s normal to have nerves the first time with a new sitter. Keep your eyes on the prize of a few blissful hours, rattle off the impressive resume and extensive background check you completed, and let them know they are in for a treat too. Order pizza. Bribe them. Whatever. Kiss them quick and you’re on your way!
