Chatting up filmmaker Rob Stewart, REVOLUTION.

April 18, 2013 by Sonya 2 Comments

It’s just past 11 o’clock in the morning and I’ve made my way to Cafe Diplomatico or “The Dip” we’ve often referred to. It’s a main-stay along College Street where everyone from suits to moms with strollers and old timers like to hang out. It’s one of those joints where you can just be yourself. Just chill.

This morning I’ve arranged to meet up with award-winning filmmaker, Rob Stewart to chat about his latest documentary, REVOLUTION. You may recognize the Stewart from SHARKWATER. The film that rocked the Asian fishing industry off kilter and made many open their eyes about one of the most coveted delicacies in chinese cuisine.
Stewart showed up on a skateboard and just as you would expect. His personality is very humble, caring and passionate. He’s been on the publicity circuit doing interviews all over the map so I’m honoured to nab him for an hour for breakfast. I had to tell him right away about how his first film made an impact on me. You see, growing up Shark’s Fin Soup was expected at celebrations. It was a symbol of good fortune and health. It was the first or second course out of a zillion dishes when we were at weddings and  parties. No one ever thought about it. Not me anyway. No one questioned it. Restaurants proudly displayed dried shark’s fin in glass showcases. Until Stewart’s film created a movement of awareness. You see, the rest of the shark was discarded. They were only fished, and illegally, for the fins. I was sick to find out and refuse to have it if ever presented. Many chinese restaurants have now banned the soup.
When I met with Rob, I was curious about how this all started- this passion for the underwater world. Born and raised in Toronto he fell in love with the ocean at a young age while his family spent vacation times in the Caribbean. “I remember, my mom use to chase me around with a bucket because I kept collecting creatures at the beach when I was as young as three,” said Stewart with a big smile. “And the day I was old enough to scuba dive, my parents took me out and my family encourage it. My interest in the ocean all came naturally.”
We started to laugh as I mentioned that I get a little squirmy when my boys catch frogs and salamanders. “Yeah, my mom always let me keep whatever I found no matter how weird it was. She always told me we’d figure out what to do to take care of any creature.” (note to self: be that mom)
Stewart’s parents encouraged his passion and respect for the living creatures in this universe we share. He continued his education in Marine Biology while pursuing his passion in scuba diving and underwater photography. His travels took him around the world and his favourite scuba diving location is Papau New Guinea. In both films, Stewart captures some of the most amazing animals of the sea. From the beautiful, and deadly, Flamboyant Cuttlefish to the tiny Pygmy Seahorses to the creatures that are the ugliest that lurk in the muck, the cinematography is truly stunning and must be seen on a big screen. But through his experience, he’s also witness first hand the dark side of and the damage that is being done to the oceans and this is where reality hits.

I asked Stewart on the heels of the success of SHARKWATER, why this next movie? “I was so  inspired by the impact that SHARKWATER made in this world. It really made a difference so then I realized that the issue is even greater than saving the sharks, we need to save the world in order to save the sharks and other living beings. If we don’t pay attention to the environment, the rainforest then we, and the sharks, are fucked too,” said Stewart.
In REVOLUTION, Stewart send a message to not only adults but to the youth of today. “It’s their world and they can do something about it,” says Stewart. “I hope that when families and kids go and see this movie, they will realize that they too have a voice and they can make things happen.”

For example, kids in Saipan were so passionate about saving sharks after viewing his first film, that they wrote to their government officials. Here, at this small school, the voices of the children were heard and it made a difference. The government declared a ban.
But what else can kids do? Stewart is passionate about getting the message out that it doesn’t matter how big or small the effort — it is always worth it and every effort counts. It doesn’t matter what your background is or what your financial situation is because everyone has a voice.
Choose a cause that you’re interested in and learn more about it. See how you can help.
Form a club at school, with your friends, or your swim team.
Raise awareness even with events and raise some funds for your cause of choice.
Be mindful of your choices in what you consume. Where and how are you clothes made? How are the animals you eat treated? Is what you eat sustainable? Ask the questions. Just be aware.

Playing now in theatres across the country, REVOLUTION has grossed just over $130K in the first three days. With impressive pre-release group sales, the film continues to attract large numbers of students and educators in the week leading up to Earth Day. “The reaction to the film by youth has been amazing,” said Jim Sherry, President and Founder of D Films. “Their enthusiasm and love for the planet is inspiring and we hope that they continue to be ambassadors for the film and its message.”

In order to reflect the filmmakers’ push towards environmental education, $25,000; ten scholarships for $2,500 each will be awarded to Canadian students who are committed to creating a sustainable society for future generations–courtesy of D Films, NBC Universal and Metro, in a joint effort.

The award winning film REVOLUTION takes you on an epic adventure with filmmaker and activist Rob Stewart, Director of the groundbreaking documentary SHARKWATER. Join Rob as he embarks on a 4-year journey through 15 countries to find the key to empowering a sweeping conservation movement across Canada and the world. After travelling to some of Earth’s most beautiful and fragile ecosystems, learning from the top environmental scientists and participating in major protests and rallies across the globe, Rob leads us to the ultimate understanding – that the younger generation is our future, and hold the key to saving our species.

I’ve seen REVOLUTION already but I’m going again with my son. REVOLUTION is in wide-release at theatres across Canada. For more information about the film, visit the official website www.therevolutionmovie.com
Special thank you to Rob Stewart for taking the time to meet up with me for breakfast! I’m so inspired by his focus, passion and humbleness.
Here is the official trailer. I still get chills when I see this…

Looks amazing! Sharkwater was chilling, and this looks equally as compelling. Bravo to Rob Stewart for shining a spotlight on such issues!! (And a good Toronto boy, at that. YAY!)

Sounds like it’s a great movie and a worthy follow-up to Sharkwater. Can’t wait to see it!
