A few months ago, I came home late after some sort of wayward evening with a couple of my foxes, and drunkenly caught the last few minutes of Saturday Night Live. My love for that show has waxed and waned over the years for many reasons, but I often still enjoy the programme.
I recently tried to remember the singer – a funky looking blonde Brit, with sort of ethereal-looking makeup around the eyes… I remember liking what I heard, but it didn’t all register. Ah, yes… wayward evenings can erase many a thought. (Hic!) For a while there, I thought I’d just dreamed it all.
But since I got wise and decided to record SNL from then on, imagine my surprise when just last night, I caught the rerun of said SNL episode, starring the excellent (and pregnant) Tina Fey, with the musical guest, Ellie Goulding. As her second preformance of the evening, she sang Your Song, written by Elton John.
I love her breathy, almost elfin-like version – her voice is perfectly controlled, and simple. Along with that haunting, beautiful cello… it made me cry.
Whenever I hear a rendition of this song, I get a tender feeling that makes me tingle in my nose, behind my eyes… I love my Martin so very much, you see – it is a perfect love note, these lyrics… all of them.
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is while you’re in the world.
I’m so happy I got to see it again. Lucky me.
And now you can too, in case you missed it… lucky you!
Sniff.

I love Sade – and “By Your Side” is so, SO lovely!! Nice choice for your down-the-aisle song, lady. I’ll bet your chin was wobbling by the time you made it to the altar. *swoons*

Isn’t it, though? I loved it too. (And yes, I used to sing it to a nursing babe as well…) Le sigh. What an excellent song.

So beautiful! And sweet. And a little sad. But that’s what love is, right? Do you like Sade? My husband and I got married to “By Your Side”, and it is still the only song guaranteed to make me weepy. Yes. Lucky us 🙂

Beautiful version, Tracey, thanks for sharing. That’s the song I sang to my baby girl as I nursed her in the middle of the night during her first few months. I still sing it to her quietyly when I wander into her bedroom to watch her sleeping sometimes.
