My sister and I were discussing Level 42 the other night. (This is what sisters when they visit each other, over wine and fancy nibbles late into the night, you know.)
Anyway, we contemplated one of their most popular songs, Something About You, which is one I listen to with a vague, nostalgic happiness… I was never a massive fan of Level 42 (I mean, was anyone, really?) but this song always had an easiness about it I liked a lot.
It was a pretty big hit back in the day, but it wasn’t played to the point of saturation. There was so much music coming out of the UK during the mid-eighties… theirs was less edgy and brooding than, say, The Smiths or Jesus and the Mary Chain. Unlike some other video-making British bands of the mid-eighties (think Duran Duran, or Fine Young Cannibals, or pretty much ANYBODY else), they weren’t visually interesting or sexy. There was nothing particularly hot about them. Nor cool about them. They weren’t bad boys – they were non-descript, harmless English guys – but, I wasn’t about to go to a Level 42 concert and throw my panties on the stage. (I don’t think I would have actually gone to a Level 42 concert AT ALL, but I digress…)
Cut to this rendition by Anthony David she turned me onto, which gives me the same sort of happiness. I like this song. I like his version – it’s clean and simple, (it’s just a dude with his guitar) and he doesn’t over-sing it. I don’t always like a remake of a classic, but in this case, I give it a thumbs up.
What do you think?
Happy Monday, people!
