My list of must see movies in theatres is very LONG. But this one has me thinking… a lot. The world seems to keep challenging us in many ways and far beyond many of our imaginations and understandings. While we try to keep on top of our daily lives we sometimes have those “what ifs?” enter our minds. This new film has my brain spinning in so many ways. So, what if people around us are disappearing without notice, trace or reason? What if you were left behind?
Based on the New York Times Best Seller, LEFT BEHIND is where the end only begins.
Synopsis: LEFT BEHIND is an apocalyptic action-thriller movie starring Nicolas Cage that brings biblical prophecy to life in modern times. In a blink of an eye, the biblical Rapture strikes the world. Millions of people disappear leaving their clothes and belongings behind. Vanishing in the midst of everyday activities like driving, travelling in planes or doing groceries. There’s no one to help or provide answers. Everyone left behind is looking for answers and trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
Rayford Steele (Nicholas Cage) is the pilot of PanCon flight 257 heading to London when passengers suddenly vanish. His personal life is strained with a troubled marriage and a challenging relationship with his daughter Chloe (Cassi Thomson). His wife, Irene (Lea Thompson), a loving mother with a new found faith, is desperate to communicate the truth of her religious following but ends up causing more anxiety.
“My greatest hope for this movie is that people will be entertained and thrilled by it, but also that they’ll go home and have conversations with their family, and ask ‘do you think this could happen, or couldn’t happen?’ and it’ll inspire discussion and closeness,” says Cage.
The film also starts Chad Michael Murray as Buck Williams, a well-known news correspondent who is trapped on the flight piloted by Rayford Steele, and is witness to the hysteria on the flight.
LEFT BEHIND was produced by Paul Lalonde and Michael Walker and co-written by Paul Lalonde and John Patus. “We’re seeing a number of big, biblical movies on the calendar this year, particularly SON OF GOD, NOAH, and EXODUS. what makes LEFT BEHIND different is that is is a contemporary story that could actually happen at any moment,” says Paul Lalonde. “It’s also a historical account in a sense, because it’s based on a true story, it just hasn’t happened yet. So it’s very important to us that the core story not be changed.”
While some of the scenes could have given a bit more to chew on or even step up in reality factor (if my loved one suddenly disappears, I will not be sitting calmly in my seat on a plane. I would indeed be in mass hysteria screaming and crying my eyes out!) the film makes for a great conversation starter. And well…Chad Michael Murray, you know.
