Listen, I love prank videos as much as the next person. You know, the ones where people jump out of closets to scare unsuspecting victims, switching sugar to salt — that kind of stuff. The kind of prank where both parties end up laughing their butts off afterwards. But the prank you’re about to watch crosses the line, especially since the target of this prank is aimed at a young child.
A US couple caught their son’s terrified reaction on-camera when they told him he had Ebola. Yes, EBOLA. The lie was all a part of a joke that they later posted on Vine under the username Tevyn Demmings. The video was posted with the caption, ‘When you lie and tell a bad ass kid they got Ebola #funny #Ebola.” The Vine has over 2 million views.
In the short clip, you see the mother wearing a face mask and holding a thermometer. When she shows the father their son’s ‘temperature’ he yells out, “Oh hell no! He got Ebola!” Their son immediately bursts into tears while his younger brother runs the other way.
A few things go through my mind when I watch this. One, to think that two people thought it would be a funny to falsely diagnose their son with a deadly disease blows my mind. I don’t care how ‘bad ass’ you think your kids are, it’s cruel. Secondly, the fact that they thought this was a lighthearted joke worthy of posting on the internet, just further goes to show you this couple’s poor judgement. And let’s not forget the complete disrespect it shows to the current victims of Ebola trying to fight off the deadly disease.
There’s enough fear surrounding Ebola as it is — fear that unfortunately washes off on our children. So to tell your child they’re infected with the deadly virus is nothing short of terrifying for them, especially when it comes from a source they trust, their parents. Sure, some people will find this video incredibly funny but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it is also very inappropriate.
These parents have A LOT of making up to do.
