Even if you’re “Team Jen”, you probably still recognize that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are one of the coolest power couples in Hollywood. They make amazing films, are constantly focusing their efforts on some humanitarian cause and they have a lovely family.
And while we are all well aware of what a picture perfect family they have, it’s always nice to hear a bit of news that shows you, yes, they are great parents. (Honestly, it even kind of restores your faith in humanity, a bit.)
Reports have surfaced says that Jolie and Pitt are supporting their daughter Shiloh’s desire to be called “John”. The couple have been very supportive and have given John the freedom to express whatever they are feeling. (We will here in refer to John by the gender neutral “they”.)
Jolie and Pitt have always been very open about John being a tomboy. “She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers,” Jolie said previously. Pitt had also previously told Oprah Winfrey that Shiloh wanted to be called “John”.
The rumours began to resurface after the family attended the premiere of Unbroken and the 8-year-old was wearing a suit and had short hair.
The couple is receiving a lot of well-deserved praise for accepting John and respecting their wishes. Instead of approaching their desire to dress and act like a boy as a phase they will grow out of, Pitt and Jolie have embraced their child and given them the space to really explore who they are.
It may seem like a no-brainer to accept your child, no matter what decisions they make about their gender and sexuality. But we all know that not all kids are lucky enough to have accepting parents like Pitt and Jolie.
We’re happy to end of 2014 with a story of love and acceptance, after a year that seemed to lack both.
