It is not often that we feel like we can relate to celebrities and it is even more rare to feel like you can related to Kim Kardashian. She recently spoke with Romy and the Bunnies about the joys (and struggles) of being a working mom. And while she may have a staff of nannies, chefs and maids to ease the adjustment of a work–life balance, Kim had some very on-point things to say that all working moms can relate to.
First and foremost, Kim is loving motherhood and all it has brought into her life. “I love being a mom, it’s the most rewarding feeling. I really love every phase, just the way my daughter laughs with me. All of the small things in life you appreciate.”
Her biggest challenge thus far was returning to work. Kim referred to it as a hiatus, but here in Canada we are lucky enough to call it maternity (or parental) leave. “[I] found it challenging to start working again because I didn’t want to spend any time away, but you adjust and prioritize,” Kim said.
And prioritizing for Kim means choosing what projects are really worth her time: “You become more selective and work on projects that are so meaningful because you want every other waking moment spent with your family.” This is true for working parents everywhere. Prioritizing is essential to a happy life, both at work and at home. Sometimes making it to your kid’s baseball game is more important than meeting a work deadline, and vice versa. Do your best and remember that life is a juggling act and that’s okay!
Kim’s favourite time to spend with her daughter, North? Taking a nap, of course. “We cuddle and fall asleep holding each other. It’s my favourite time just snuggling with her.”
Maybe her most important piece of advice for the everyday, non-celebrity mom? Take time for yourself! “You have to remember though to make time for yourself. If you feel good, you will be happy in your career and family life and everyone is happy!” Most moms, at some point, find themselves last on their own priority list: kids, partner, home, work… personal time seems to get lost. So, go get a mani-pedi, take a yoga class, have a glass of wine with friends and if anyone asks why, tell them Kim Kardashian told you to do it!
