2015 was a hard year for Kelly Rutherford: after a long fought battle to gain signatures to her petition, there was a glimmer of hope in the summer when her two children we’re sent home to her in New York, her custody battle came to a tragic end when her kids were sent back to her ex-husband, Daniel Giersch, in Monaco permanently.
On the cover of this month’s Elle Romania, the Gossip Girl actress talks about her very public six-year custody battle isn’t going to keep her down in 2016.
“Children need both parents. You do not want to make them suffer,” Rutherford told the magazine. “I hope that this story [can] be an example to other.”
In late 2015, a judge ruled that Rutherford can only see her children Hermes, 8, and Helena, 6, in Monaco and France. They can no longer visit with Rutherford in the United States. The judge made this ruling after Rutherford refused to send her children home from New York after their summer holiday.
So now, in the face of great loss and sadness, Rutherford is trying to find peace with the situation, for the sake of her kids. Speaking of her parent’s divorce, as a kid she knew that as long as her mother was happy, “everything was okay in the world.”
“I know that if I find my peace, they will benefit … Now, I want them to be happy, to know that they are loved,” Rutherford says of Helena and Hermes. “I hope [this] will make them stronger. I hope they will look back and have the impression that it was not as bad as it was, actually.”
She plans to focus on her advocacy organization, The Children’s Justice Campaign, and hopes that her story can be used to raise awareness of similar cases.
“Perhaps activist will increase because of this situation,” she says. “I hope that something good will come of it.”
