In a new interview with Glamour, Jennifer Lawrence shed some light on the important role that Planned Parenthood has played in her life.
The actress told Glamour that because her mom was extremely religious growing up, Lawrence relied on contraceptives provided by Planned Parenthood as a teen. For her, Planned Parenthood was the only place to turn to for advice.
After the news spread about the shootings that occurred at a Planned Parenthood location in Colorado in November 2015, Lawrence expressed her sadness for the lives that were taken. She remembers that on the night of the tragic incident, celebrity and friend, Amy Schumer, came over crying. “Amy’s the most empathetic person I’ve ever met in my life. When she came over this morning, she was crying. She had just… seen the news about the shooting at Planned Parenthood.”
The incident has compelled Lawrence to speak out on the matter. “It isn’t an attack on abortions; it’s an attack on women,” she said.
“Because Planned Parenthood is so much more [than abortion]. I wouldn’t have been able to get condoms and birth control and all these things I needed as a normal teenager who was growing up in a Jesus house,” she expressed, adding, “And now I am a successful woman who has not had a pregnancy.”
Many have relied on Planned Parenthood for providing birth control, condoms and medical care across the United States. Facilities like Planned Parenthood are important to have, without them we would not have the information and resources that both men and women need to be safe, and informed. No matter what your views are on abortion, Planned Parenthood is necessary for our community to get the sexual education and assistance that everyone deserves.
While Lawrence knows that as a successful Hollywood actress “it’s not smart, or business-wise, to be opinionated.. But then what’s the point in having a voice at all if I’m not going to use it for what I truly believe in?”
We are glad that she is using her fame to help empower women everywhere, and contributing to stopping these tragic incidents from happening again.
