Not terribly surprising news today, but still…Catherine Zeta-Jones (43) and Michael Douglas (68) are “taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.”
A spokeswoman for Zeta-Jones issued the above statement in an email to The Associated Press and also stated that there would be no further comment. Which, quite predictably, allows us plenty of room to speculate.
Despite the 25 year age difference between the two, the couple appeared tight for most of their 13 year marriage. It was a second chance for Douglas, who went through an expensive divorce from then-wife Diandra Luker. He started a new family with Zeta-Jones and today they have two young kids.
Yet during their marriage, their life has certainly had their ups and downs. Douglas made an emotional plea in court as his drug-addicted son Cameron (34) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for heroin posession. Then, in 2010 he battled throat cancer and this summer said publicly he thought one potental cause was oral sex. Zeta-Jones also had her own health demons to battle, revealing in 2011 that she had been suffering from a bipolar disorder.
The separation is not terribly shocking because rumours have been circulating for quite some time now. It doesn’t help that the two have not been photographed together since April, when the couple attended a gala event at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center.
Was it the health issues? Was it the age gap? Or was it just being a Hollywood couple? Take your pick.
