Kathy Reichs: Going Virals

November 14, 2010 by Alice

[and a contest!]

Kathy Reichs had me at Deja Dead. I was already a fan of Patricia Cornwell, to whom Reichs is often compared, and loved the forensic mode of mystery-solving, so different from more traditional detective work. I liked the character from that very first book, and found the details fascinating. Years later, I’ve read all but the latest, while I’ve left Cornwell behind some time ago. So yeah, my interest was piqued when I heard about her newest venture – this one, for teens.

Forensic mysteries for teens? You bet, and Ms. Reichs is on a book tour right now, too.

Toronto readers: Kathy Reichs will be talking about this book and signing copies tonight at 7:00 at Indigo – Yonge & Eglinton. So cool!

Montreal readers – Ms. Reichs will be signing on Thursday at 6:00 at Librairie Paragraphe Bookstore, 2220 McGill College Ave.

Meanwhile, I also have three copies to give away to someone with a teen crime fiction fan in their life!  Read the details below to see how you can enter to win a copy.

Now about that book…

Reichs Viral.jpgVirals
Kathy Reichs

We start out by meeting Tory, who turns out to be the niece of Temperance Brennan, the forensic anthropolgist and star of the adult series that spawned the TV show Bones. She lives on a remote island off of Charleston, with her newly-introduced father, also a scientist, and has always loved discovery herself, all of which sets her up to be the kind of girl who just would get too involved in a mystery that came her way. Which is, of course, exactly what happens.

Tory’s dad and the parents of her three friends work on an island research facility, and there is something hinky going on. They trip across it while exploring, and by the end of the novel, they have both reopened a decades-old mystery and been infected by an experimental canine virus that has profound effects on them – and seem to give them some remarkably canine traits and powers, to boot.

A bit of a departure from her adult series, this new teen thriller/mystery incorporates a sci-fi element that will appeal to fans of the vampire/ werewolf/ zombie fiction that has been taking the teen lit scene by storm in recent years.

If you’ve got a teen fan of crime drama like CSI, Law & Order, or oh, say, Bones in your house or on your holiday gift list, and you’re hoping to get them infected with a love of reading, this is a perfect pick.

(See what I did there, with the infecting them and the viral? You like that? I thought you would.)

It’s easy and simple to enter this contest.  Just leave a comment below and let me know what genre the teen(s)
in your life enjoy.  I’ll announce winners on Shelf Candy.

The contest ends on November 26th at noon.

My teenage sister reads everything and anything, just like I do, though fantasy fiction is near and dear to both of our hearts. A good mystery is never amiss though, and honestly, as much as she loves to read, I would most likely be keeping this book for myself. I’m such a kid at heart! 😉
