Have you seen The New Girl? 500 Days of Summer?
My girl crush has officially been moved to Zooey Deschanel. (Sorry Scarlett and Mandy). I love everything about her. Quirky style, hair, singing voice (hello Winnie The Pooh) and …well…everything.
Then this letter started making the rounds. She wrote it to Vogue when she was 17.
Why would you want to limit the spectrum of beauty to an “ideal” when you, as a popular women’s magazine, have the opportunity to expand it? I don’t think any woman should have to feel as if she needs to shove herself into an “ideal” to be beautiful. Beauty should be something that is celebrated and something that is enjoyable, not something that people should feel uncomfortable about achieving. Most of the women, and certainly most of the adolescent girls, in the United States do not feel completely secure with themselves, especially with their appearance; is insecurity something you want to advocate? As American women, we don’t need discouragement, but inspiration.

Well said!!!! Now I love Zooey more than ever. And I think they need to re-cut Miss Representation and add my girl into it.

I’ve been a big fan of hers from the first time I watched Elf. Even her name in that is quirky – Jovie.
I love her old school, retro voice. It’s so sultry and classic.
I just can’t look at her name and not think it’s Zoo-ee…the spelling is just…wrong.

Love the letter! Wow. Inspiring. I also love that she is quirky and pokes fun at herself on the show but is strong and real.
