THE GOOD
Okay. So, some of the dressed I liked really surprised me. I don’t even know what it was about this Gwyneth Paltrow number that I liked. It’s not typically what I look for when it comes to Oscar-wear. But, you know, she wasn’t nominated for anything, so I like that she didn’t go all ballgown-esque. I thought it flowed really nicely, and I liked the color on her.
Pregnancy works for Best-Actress winner Natalie Portman. She looked stunning in this color and this gown. I wasn’t loving her earrings. They looked like they were going to pull her earlobes right off.
This was my favorite look of Anne Hathaway’s last night, with the exception of those lovely sparkly shoes she wore with that tuxedo number. But this was just perfect. The color was great, the cut was flattering. LOVED.
Age-appropriate for Hailee Steinfeld. I loved her hair. I loved the little headband. I loved the length. Perfection!
I am really surprised that I liked this look on Mandy Moore. Twitter was all a-flutter with this look being too old, too sophisticated. But, I thought she REALLY looked lovely. I would have preferred a little color on Mandy, truthfully, but this totally worked.
I want this dress in my closet right now. This was perfect. I love the little sleeve, the sash, the color, the material, the jewels. Brilliant.
THE BAD
Okay, this dress is showing up on Best Dressed lists all over the place today. Really? To me it looks like Mila Kunis left half of her dress at home and came to the awards wearing her skivvies. Also, I felt like the belt was suffocating her a little bit…too tight perhaps? I did love the color.
Nicole Kidman almost gets it, but she’s a little bit too angled with this number.
Oh, Melissa Leo. This is just a horrible dress. The fit is wrong, the material is wrong, the color is wrong, the shoulders. UGH. NOT GOOD.
Michelle Williams certainly went with a WHITE theme last night, eh? Her hair, her lips, her earrings, her dress, her skin…ALL WHITE. Also? ALL WRONG.
I so wanted to like Cate Blanchett’s dress. Her hair and makeup was flawless. The purple was a lovely shade. But, really, I cannot get past the space-aged cut-out in the torso. What IS that? And
the shoulders? And the YELLOW? Not loving this at all.
the shoulders? And the YELLOW? Not loving this at all.
Oh Marisa Tomei. NO NO NO NO NO.
Again, Scarlet ALMOST gets it. Her hair looked just a bit too post-coital for me, and the dress was just a wee bit MY GRANDMOTHER’S CURTAINS. Ugh. There was so much potential here. But Scarlet is a girl who needs some definition in a dress…she doesn’t have the body for a straight dress with no shape. A belt. An a-line. SOMETHING could have saved this for her.
I so wanted to love this on Halle Berry. She is so lovely, always and the top half of this was flawless. Her bustline, her hair, her makeup…GREAT. But the bottom of this dress? Horrific.
THE BOOBIE
All I’m seeing is boob here. WOW. Actually, I take it back. I this Jennifer Hudson looks fantastic these days. Weight watchers has done wonders for her. I thought she looked great, albeit a little too boobie. That kind of stuff belongs at the Grammys.
AND THE BARBIE
I didn’t hate this look. In fact, I thought it was pretty classic. Considering she wasn’t nominated, this was a pretty good choice for Reese. I would have prefered a little less mermaid on the bottom and more of an a-line, but, I mean, girl can wear anything.
But it felt like she was being weighed down by her hair. It was just too much. It turned her into a bobble-head. It turned her into, well, Toy Story 3 Barbie.
What did YOU think? Hits? Misses?
Of course, I have other thoughts on last night’s Oscars. You can read them here.

Thanks for this Ali! so much fun
Loved Gwnyth -my 11 year old nephew said “cool, she looks like a pillar” I love that look for her.
I have to disagree on Michelle Williams- love the hair , love the dress, love the whitewash of it all. Very sophisticated in the land of frou frou. I also loved Halle’s look- elegant and sexy – loved her dress and her hair always.
When you open the jewelry box there is a little figurine who turns to music and that is Hailee – we all adored her look. Magic.
Liked Scarlett’s hair actually but the dress was definitely grandma’s doily ….

Anne!
Hailee, on the red carpet, said that the dress was made just for her and she helped design it! love!

JEN! I liked Cate Blanchett’s dress! It was especially lovely when she was walking. It looked like she was floating gracefully across the stage. I liked that it looked a bit different. Almost futuristic.
I think Mandi Moore’s dress is great as well. Sheesh! People are picky!
But really if I had to pick one that way perfect it would have to be little Hailee Steinfeld. Age appropriate and stunning! Who ever helped her pick that out (Stylist? Mom?) did a wonderful job!

It’s true, Jen IS the only one who liked Cait’s dress…
Loved Reece and Jenny H, but thought Gwyneth looked like a Fem Bot from Ausin Powers.

I loved Reese. She was my fave of the night.
I also really liked Mila Kunis – thought her dress was very pretty and ethereal.
And Michelle Williams. I thought she looked very put together.
I didn’t get the same feeling of too much boob from JHud…more like squishy boob.
Let’s talk about boobs…Oprah’s boobs. They were overwhelming to me…
I though Mandy Moore looked like a Barbie cake when she was performing.
Someone tweeted that Cate Blanchett looked their grandmothers side chair…and she did when she was sitting down.
The only thing I liked about Ann Hathaway was her fantastic sparkly tuxedo shoes and the blue dress she had on towards the end.
And despite failing miserably /being incredibly high/wishing he was anywhere else – I still dig James Franco.

I didn’t comment on Jennifer Lawrence’s dress because, to me, it wasn’t worth talking about. Heh. I totally see the Baywatch bathing suit reference. It just WAS, yanno?
I LOVE reading everyone’s opinions. They are SO different, it’s great!

totally agree. except for mandy moore. loved gwenyth paltrow.

I agree with The Boobie dress. My first reaction was “YIKES!”.
I may be the only one but I loved Cate Blanchett’s dress. It was classy and unique and totally “her”.
I also loved Mila Kunis’ dress. I thought it was very pretty and the colour was spectacular on her.
And Mandy Moore looked AMAZING! I can’t believe people didn’t love that dress on her. However, I couldn’t stand the blue one she wore when singing.
As for Jennifer Laurence – I thought it was totally Baywatch! She looked gorgeous but it could have been a bathing suit. Not an Oscar dress IMO.
I thought Reese looked cute. I don’t know what the big deal was. I didn’t think it was either terrible or wonderful.
Marisa Tomei’s dress was a disaster.
Michelle Williams, in my opinion, was spectacular. Like a little pixie.
I didn’t like many of Anne Hathaway’s including the hideous bustle on this red one.
What was Nicole Kidman thinking ADDING hips to her dress?! Just ugly.
But, it was definitely all amazing to watch!

Sorry, but I LOVED Mila Kunis and Reese Witherspoon last night! Natalie was my favourite. I do agree with your misses, though. Scarlett and Melissa looked like doilies! And Jennifer Lawrence’s dress looked like a Baywatch bathing suit with a long skirt!

I was DYING to see your write up. I like to see how we match up! We had a couple of big agreements…the BOOB?? Ugh – JHud – NO! Nicole and Cate – NOOOO! What were they thinking??? But I loved Mila Kunis’ dress, I thought she was amazing! And I loved Reese’s ponytail…like thought the dress looked like a well tailored Smart Set dress at promtime but the hair was fascinating. And Mandy Moore is my girl crush (even more now that she’s married to Ryan Adams) but I didn’t like that look much for her – too severe. Now question to you the expert…why is no one talking about how much Jennifer Laurence’s dress was just like the red number that Scar Jo pulled off a few years ago? I thought she looked amazing but it was the first thing that came into my head! (and Annie’s red dress was amazing!!!)

Agree completely. Cate looks like she’s wearing clothes made for a lifesized paper doll – velcroed on. And Mandy Moore? Holy moly, I didn’t even recognize her. Gorgeous. I guess Mila’s dress was edgy? Er… something? We’re heading back into Madonna territory this season. Pointy boob cones, here we come!

I didn’t get to watch the awards last night, so this is my first peek at the gowns. I agree with your choices of hits and misses though. Melissa Leo’s was, by far, the WORST. Blech.
