Oh, SJP. Oh, no no no no no. Yes. I do find yellow to be a fantastic color on the red carpet. But, this? This was just a mess of Chanel. The tanorexic skin color, the hair, the dress. It was all just a big NO for me.
THE GOOD!
Her hair, her makeup, and the top of this dress were perfect. She looked amazing. I was NOT crazy about the bottom, however. Was just pretty meh.
I was, by far, the most surprised by Cameron Diaz. Usually looks ridiculous on the red carpet and this year, she proved me wrong. She still bugs me and I’m not sold on her lip color, but her dress was stunning and her hair looked amazing.
Kristen Stewart CAN clean up! It’s not my favorite dress, but it’s the nicest thing I have EVER seen her wear.
I LOVED this dress. I just wish she had chosen a color other than her skin tone. It’s super flattering and it’s just lovely. I really liked it!
As with Sandra Bullock’s look, the hair makeup and top of the dress were perfect, the bottom was just a little too frump for me.
STUNNING. Love the color, the shape, everything.
THE BAD!
boobs. that’s really all there is to say here.
Oh, Diane Kruger. Oh no.
I LOVE Maggie. Love her. But this dress looks like it belongs on the beach. and the lip color? Not my favorite.
Miley almost gets it. I thought the bottom of the dress was lovely and age appropriate, but the stop of this dress? What is even going on here? It looks too tight and just bizarre. Did NOT like this look at all.
I did NOT get Zoe Seldana’s dress. There was almost too much going on here. The gold at the top mixed with the pinata material purples at the bottom. Not my thing.
Bonus category: THE TWINSIES!!
Who wore it better?
Amanda Seyfried

Crazy, isn’t it? The lifestyles the rich live. Though I’ve thought many time how difficult it must be to not have any privacy and always have people and photographers everywhere… always in your face. Guess it’s one of things where you can’t have your cake and eat it too. I think I would much rather have riches and skip the fame part,

Hey Ali
Great calls. Was it just me or could you see the outline of Miley’s bellybutton when she presented. ARGH she drive me batty! And Maggie – I usually love her but I agree it was like a beach dress. I loved Vera Far..whoever – I loved that freaking dress. And Cammie brought it. I want Sandra Bullock and Jesse James to adopt me as the third person in their marriage.

Naomi – HATE YOU? That’s just the thing about Oscar dresses…they are so subjective!!! Obviously the people wearing them loved them!
I am just very into classic beauty….and I think I would err on the side of classic and tasteful and not go for something printed or too out there. but that’s just my personal taste. Some people love prints…that’s their thing. But, in my mind, Oscar is about CLASS and awards like mtv movie awards or grammys are more for going alittle bit more over the top.

Kath,
Although I did not like SJP’s dress I don’t think we can fault her for how she is aging. Every time I look in the mirror, and even worse, at photos, I am horrified by how old I look. I am not aging well. Perhaps it’s because I smoked, perhaps it’s because I didn’t use sunscreen, or perhaps it’s genetics…but it sucks! Poor SJP and poor me!
As for the dresses, I agree with Ali on most of them.

i agree with everything! you are spot on. i think amanda wore it better than j. lo – i didn’t like that flap. I also liked vera f., meryl streep, sigournew weaver and rachel mcadams.

I thought Sandra Bullock looked OK but the lip colour was just HELLO there. TOO bright and obnoxious for her dress. The bottom also gave her a BIG looking bottom as well. It just does not look good in that photo because she is looking straight on. It looked good when she moved.
OK you guys are obviously going to hate me. I thought SJP was original and was chanelling ’60s retro Chanel with the hair and all. I loved her in it. She stepped away from the extremely fitted silhouette that was pretty common. OK the hair was a bit fly-away, the eyes were dark and she did look a little orange but she is always known for having her own unique sense of style. I was not disappointed. Honestly I hate it when most of them ‘play it safe’.
Can we not mention the most common trait of all the ladies. They were all posing with their DAMN HAND on their hip. No originality there, I now Tyra would FAIL them all in ANTM. Even Meryl Streep was caught hand-to-hip.
OK hate me again. But Penelope was looking as if her gown had swallowed her up. There was just SO much material and it looked way too long and not quite correctly fitted.
Sadly, Kate Winslet bored me. I think you’re right on that one, good from the waist up.
OK hate me again. I liked the print that Maggie wore. Not everyone can wear a print and I give her props for staying away from the normal safe one colour thing.
I obviously like something a little different and not so common place. I am not knocking the classics when they are done right, but like it when they at least try to put a little of their own personality into it.
On one note: my Man, the lover of all things Charlize Theron, his jaw dropped when he saw that dress, he even mentioned that it was definitely going on the BAD list.
I can already hear the gasps when you read this. Heh.

I agree with you on SJP. The silver & yellow was not my fav combo, plus the dress was just too sack-like. Worst part for me was her eye makeup. Too dark & made her eyes look so tiny.
Loved Sandra Kate & Penelope. Liked Kristen stewart, although I would have loved it in another colour. Black is just a little old for her. Like the sillouette on Maggie & I could even take the pattern but she lost me on the fushia lipstick.
Would have loved both Kristen Stewart & Miley to take some posture lessons or steer clear of strapless because all strapless does is accentuate bad posture. All I could say whenever I saw them was “Stand up straight!!!” (Oh my, I’m my mother).
When I saw Zoe from the waist up I thought “Oh she looks beautiful” & then the full dress shot came & I thought “Oh. My. Word.” The ruffles, the slit way too close to centre, & the horrid purple shoes.
I’m going with Amanda. But don’t you think that both women are just firing their stylists today for the way-too-similar dresses?!?

I thought Sandra Bullock looked beautiful and got even more so with that lovely acceptance speech. SJP, on the other hand looked frightening! What a shame. She usually looks so classy. Miley looked OK but not age appropriate and I just found the top was a bit underwhelming. Although my 10 year-old son seemed to like it 😉 Agree about everyone else but have to say that the ONLY reason someone would wear the dress Charlize did is to get people talking…BOOBS.
Kath says
LOL, I knew that 😉 The bottom was nice. Nobody in Hollywood helps these girls stay young, do they? Sandra Bullock needs to take Miley in hand and stop HER from driving in cars with boys, right?
Oh, I ADORED Zoe Seldana’s dress, though. Weird, but so beautiful. Cameron’s was a lovely surprise, and you’re so right about Penelope. She was stunning.
Ali says
Kath..I only meant the BOTTOM of her dress was age appropriate. definitely NOT the top!
Kath says
Ali, IMHO SJP is not aging nearly as gracefully as her boy-faced hubby. So sad and yes you’re right: tanorexic. UGH.
I too was less than impressed by Miley’s dress, especially beside the beautiful (if diminutive) Amanda Seyfried (who wins the twinsies competition by a long shot). I know she’s all famous and everything, but she’s still only 17…I didn’t think her dress was particularly age-appropriate (call me a prude). And no matter her age, it still just looked like she put on her bustier and skirt but forgot to wear her top!
I thought Sandra Bullock won not only best actress but best-dressed. She was beautiful and gracious and I loved her (and I have never been a big SB fan). She deserved top honours!
