i just finished watching the new soon-to-be-released Todd Haynes (of Velvet Goldmine fame) release of “I’m Not There” and i am ready to sit down and watch it again. I have so many questions, and missed so many things…this movie certainly needs a second or even third view. It’s said to be a movie biopic…but when you have all six of these people playing the same character…it becomes something so much more than just a “Ray” or a “Walk the Line”…it’s almost becomes an un-biopic…
(Top row, from left, Marcus Carl Franklin, Cate Blanchett and Ben Whishaw; bottom, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere)
it’s a patchwork quilt. a puzzle unfolding. a series of intertwining vignettes.
These six are all Bob Dylan. only not ever called Bob Dylan. or even Robert Zimmerman.
Marcus Carl Franklin is a young boy who called himself “Woody Guthrie” and he carries a guitar case painted with the words “This machine kills fascists.” He sings depression- era folk songs. He is Bob Dylan in his formative years. He turns into..
Christian Bale is Jack Rollins…the 1960s Greenwich Village folky Dylan. He discovers that his anti-politcal songs have meaning, especially with the Vietnam War looming. He turns into…
Heath Ledger is Robbie Clark, the 1970’s superstar actor Dylan. He turns into…
Cate Blanchett is Jude Quinn, the mid-60s Dylan at his peak.. at his most electric. He alienates fans and gets interrogated by everyone around him. He (she?) turns into..
Ben Whinshaw is Arthur Rimbaud, a poet. He turns into…
Richard Gere is Billy, a retired old west outlaw.
All six are fabulous. and all six represent Bob Dylan in a different, important time in his life. If you like Bob Dylan…and even if you don’t…it’s worth seeing. probably more than once.
and because our good friends at Alliance Films love us so much, i have FOUR copies to give away. The movie has its wordwide release on the 13th, and a copy could be yours!

Being the hippie chick that I am I have to say my favourite Bob Dylan song would have to be
“Everybody Must get Stoned”

Like a Rolling Stone was always a favorite of mine and you could actually understand what he was saying 🙂

Maggie’s Farm, Forever Young, It Ain’t Me Babe. I can’t seem to pick a favourite here.

I got to see Dylan in concert last year with someone who was a real fan {he had won tix and needed someone to go with}. I had heard a few songs but had never really connected {was more a fan of his son}…but then seeing him in concert changed my opinion. He is truly an amazing artist. My fav now after hearing it live is “Just Like a Woman”.

My fav is definetly Subterranean Homesick Blues really think the song is something else, and so is the video!

I’ve always loved “Tambourine Man” until the idiot on “American Idol” ruined it for me…Darn it!
lesleybeck says
Definitely Blowin’ In The Wind – it’s timeless!

My absolute favourite has to be his “Positively 4th Street”. Haven’t we all had so-called “friends” like in this song at one time or another ?

I am going to have to agree with the last 2 people and say Hurricane.

Someone else mentioned my all-time favourite “Tangled up in Blue”, but I also love “Hurricane”…for the lyrics and the melody…it’s the whole package.

My husband is the biggest Dylan in the world, bar none. He has seen Dylan over 30 times and probably kows all the lyrics and back story of every song, so he’s always disappointed when my faves come from the top 40 Dylans, but I’d have to say “Hurricane” is one of the highest.

Picking a Dylan song is HARD…Like a Rollin’ Stone or Blowin’ in the Wind?
Chantal says
I always loved “All along the watchtower”.

“Just like a woman” hands down – so many good memories and I loooooove Edie Sedgwick.

Lay, Lady, Lay
Ministry covered this song as well when I used to listen to ‘heavy’ stuff. Bob Dylan’s version is softer and better.
Giblet says
I know it’s a little cliche… but I’ll have to go with: Like A Rolling Stone.

I love that song, too. Dylan has so many great songs, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I’m going to say… “Tangled Up in Blue.”
