i have seen MANY good movies lately. This pretty much happens to me every year what with the holidays in December and then awards show season following closely behind. There's so much to see. It's such a pleasure to be able to open up the paper and actually have to choose between all the movies i'm dying to see. Saturday night's choice was this:
i can't even tell you how thankful i am that Confessions of a Shopaholic and He's Just Not That Into You aren't out yet! Since i went to the movies with my two best girl friends…i thought for sure we'd be seeing a chick flick.
not that there's anything wrong with that. i do enjoy a good girlie movie every once in a while. but, this season…with movies like Doubt to see?? the girlie movies take back burner.
Folks…there's a reason this film was nominated for 5 Oscars…4 of them for acting roles:
Best Supporting Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Best Actress: Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams
Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis
the acting in this movie was STELLAR. All four of these actors were incredible. and i will tell you that one of Viola Davis' scenes (actually, kind of her ONLY scene) had me weeping into my sleeve. Perfection.
Without giving away too much, i will tell you that the story revolves around Father Flynn (Hoffman), the well-liked and personable priest at St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, who may or may not be molesting a student in Sister James's (Adams) 8th-grade class. Sister Aloysius (Streep) is suspicious, and even though she has not a single shred of proof, makes it her mission to bring Father Flynn down. We note the Sister's suspicions long before Sister James comes to her. In one of the first scenes of the movie, we see the sinister Sister Aloysius shudder at the mere sight of Father Flynn lightly touching one of the male students. Once Sister James comes to see her about some unusual behavior from one of her students, her response is only this: "So, it's happened"
The story is heavy-handed. And in terms of action, there is very little. and it certainly leaves you with, well, doubt. but as they say, the whole equals the sum of its parts. and Doubts parts…well, they were extraordinary.
The film opens with Father Flynn giving a sermon, asking:
"What do you do when you're not sure?"
EXACTLY.
It looks excellent!
Ooooooh. Looks like a good one.
