Today I wept. Not terribly surprising considering the recent loss of my mom, the crazy PMS I’ve been experiencing lately (anyone?), and my dad’s pending move which represents a beginning of his new life and another step further away from my mom. But these were also tears of pride and joy.
Today my kids gave me a great gift. They created a personalized, unique, and beautifully thoughtful piece of art that I will cherish forever. They created this:
This painting was made by my 6 year-old daughter and 10 year-old son. It represents my family and the wonderful memories they have of my mom. See the couple in the middle? My parents…holding hands. This means the world to me and my children created it. It is not a photograph or a video. It is their memories of their grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins, all together, before we lost my mom.
I completely love this idea. A unique piece of art is a fabulous and totally one-of-a-kind gift idea. My kids made this at a local art studio called Art Studio for Children with the wonderfully patient Nancy as their guide. The cost including the canvas, prep, supplies, and her time is $295 and all of your kids and even their cousins can work together.
My kids were not keen, especially my son. He claims he is not an artist. But after we left the two of them were on a high! My daughter said, “when can we go back?” and my son said, “I think I was wrong. I may be a better artist than I thought”.

If you truly can’t scrape up the money in your budget to get a friend or relative a gift, at least write a nice thank you note. A well thought out thank you note is one that she or he will most likely hold onto the longest.

What a terrific concept and unbelievable treasure. I know that my children would love both the process and to see their painting hang on our walls at home.

We found out about Nancy’s studio when I noticed art at a house of one of my then kindergardener’s friends. I was suprised when I found out it was her classmeate who mate it It was really lovely.
We have really enjoyed art experiences with Nancy. She is able to see the talent in any child and has a kind and warm soulfulness that brings out the best in people little and small.
Nancy also offers classes for children and adults and I have always heard positive responses my child and adult friends who have attended.
My daughter Emily has wonderful memories of art making with Nancy and my toddler Clare can’t wait until she is big enough to go. The confidence it builds in children is so valuable.
