September always feels like a bit of a scramble, trying to get everyone into pants that aren’t creeping up past the ankles, and finding shoes and jackets that fit. The mornings are chilly, but the afternoons are sunshiny and warm. Layers are a good idea.
When it comes to fall jackets for a kid this age, I don’t like to spend more than $30, if I can help it. Depending on what it’s made of, it might look odd come springtime, and chances are it won’t fit the following year, so it comes down to being a one-season item. Boo! So, I found this crushed leatherette jacket (windproof and wipeable) at the place that rhymes with Sinners recently, and it’s a size larger than is this little girl, which suits me just fine – it’s lined with a swanky grey leopard print, which shows since I have to roll the cuffs back, and it’s roomy, so she can wear a hoodie inside it for extra warmth. It will still be apt come spring, and it will still fit her next fall. It’s a brownish grey, and it goes with just about everything she owns. Score!
Like last year, I bought a “spooky” motif shirt during Halloween-sales time, practically for free, and the trick is to have her wear it roughly twice a week or more until October 31st, and then pass it along, still in perfect shape. It’s pink, it has glitter on it, it has orange-y autumn leaves, and black felt bats, and the little ghosts glow in the dark. It’s her favourite thing in the world right now. Whoop-dee-doo.
And everyone can use a hat during the fall… why not a fedora? They’re cool as hell. Go get one.
