Hey there! I’m Metalia. I’m very excited to be joining the
team here, writing about fashion, beauty, and style. I was trying to come up
with the best way of introducing myself, and it came to me: a few weeks ago,
two of my favorite
people posted about the famous people – fictional or
otherwise – that dwell in their heads. I figured, what better way to let you
know more about me in this space than introducing you to the fashion muses who
live in my head?
1. Bonnie Parker (as played by Faye Dunaway) –
Oh, Bonnie. She is my Alpha, my Omega. I first saw Bonnie & Clyde when I
was about 12 years old, and, I was instantly transfixed with her; I’ve never
stopped being inspired by her style. I love the way she drapes a scarf, carries
herself, and somehow manages to be covered up, yet still sexy.
Well, duh. That being said, yes, she OWNS the hell out of the little black
dress, but I was always more drawn to her beatnik turtleneck-flats-and-capri
pants stage. Love.
3. Joan Holloway – I
have gasped with COVETOUS DESPERATE NEED at wardrobe pieces of all the women of
Mad Men at some point or another, but
I’m a sucker for a good dress, and Joan’s series of gorgeous jewel-toned,
figure-flattering ones consistently makes me sigh. And then wish I knew how to
sew. Or perfect a time travel device.
4. Lily van der Woodsen
– As I recently hit my 30s, I’m editing my closet a bit more; I’m tossing the
skirts from college that -while cute at the time – do not, technically, cover
my butt while sitting. I’m a mom twice over. I have a few gray hairs. I need to
dress at least somewhat age
appropriately, you know? Lily van der Woodsen (Serena’s mom on Gossip Girl, a show for which I am ALSO
too old) is always gorgeously dressed, with a nod toward the seasons’ styles,
but also mindful of her age. She’s a perfect muse as I make my way into my 30s.
Although, really, I have GOT to stop watching that show.
5. Kate Moss – She’s
been my fashion idol for about five years. She introduced me to skinny jeans, and
somehow manages to always be on trend without being trendY. It’s a gift, truly.
Who are your fashion
muses? Leave a comment or let us know if you post about it on your own blog!

Welcome to Urbanmoms! I loved your first post, and am very excited to keep reading. i have lots of beauty icons, but the ones that come to mind are Jackie Kennedy, Isabella Rosselini, my mom, Kate Moss, Nicole Richie (i know she’s sooo young, but i think she does boho-chic perfectly), Rachel Weisz in the Burberry ads from 2 years ago when she was with that guy from X-men….

Audrey Hepburn is so timeless! I also really love Jackie O–her style, her class, everything!

Ooh, you just gave me an idea for an upcoming post, Erin; I’d love to write about tackling easy ways to step out of fashion comfort zones, and change up our style a bit. Thank you! 🙂
Naomi Jesson says
Audrey is my fav. Classic.

I think we share a similar sense of style. I’ve never seen Bonnie and Clyde, but I remember seeing stills from the movie and thinking how awesome Bonnie’s style was. My style is definitely clean, classic and form fitting. I admire Michelle Obama, Jackie O., and Blair Waldorf (another GG fan pushing 30 here!) and Bree VanDeKamp (shut up). If I could move J. Crew and Banana Republic into my closet, I would be a happy girl!
I just remembered someone else: remember Jillian Lewis from Project Runway who worked for Ralph Lauren? I LOVED everything she wore.

Welcome to UrbanMoms! Gosh, I don’t know who my style icons would be. I’m thinking I’m a Grace Kelly meets Marilyn Monroe. However, I’m preggers so now it’s…whatever fits me:)

Welcome to UrbanMoms. I’ve been thinking about who my peeps would be since I read Ali’s post, I love the idea!
Like Jen, I don’t have much style. My mom didn’t wear makeup either, nor was she into fashion. I’m a jeans and t-shirts girl. My work wear is classic. I’ve wanted to jazz my closet up for awhile but when I look at riskier clothing in a store I don’t get it! HELP!

I dream of the fantastic wardrobe I will buy when I drop these 10 pesky pounds.
I hear Stacy London’s voice all the time “Dress the body you have, not the body you want” It’s an issue for me. I admit.
Now I wonder if I should stop plopping my hair on top of my head in a fat pony (no time to blow dry) and stop wearing swing shirts (hides the fluff on my tummy)…
WELCOME to UrbamMoms Metalia! I’ve followed you on twitter for some time now!

Wow! Thank you so much, Lotus Blu Mama!
Metalia says
Thanks, Nancy! And I love, love, love “Life is too short to dress sadly.” LOVE.
Metalia says
Thanks, Tracey!
OOH, Sally Bowles. Such a good call. And I love the way you describe your personal style!
Metalia says
Thank you so much, Jen! I’m so excited.
Banana Republic is a great source for wardrobe staples! A lot of my work basics hail from there, and I’ve noticed that they’ve definitely been stepping up their game lately, in terms of offering riskier/funkier pieces.
Metalia says
Thank you! Gossip Girl actually ENRAGES me on a weekly basis at this point, and yet, I cannot stop watching. 🙂

Oh, of COURSE I remember! LOVED that episode!

Nancy, you hit several heads directly on the head, especially the remark “life is too short to dress sadly!”. Metalia, I’ve been a Twitter follower for a few months now, love your work. Such a great post, very inspiring. You’ve made me re-think my entire wardrobe (you may receive hate mail from my hubby, be prepared!)
Nancy says
Metalia! Welcome to the UM family. I sounds to me like we should all come to you for our next Blog weekend! Jen?
I used to work in New York for Armani BC (before children) and I liked but did not love as it did not allow for creativity. It is a little too understated for me.
I love-
My teenage daughters- with their snake hips and childlike approach to plopping their hair on top of their heads in fat ponies and swing shirts and sequins and jeans. V pretty. ( I can’t do this but admire)
Channel- what more can I say? Love the excess of necklaces and the forbidden pairing.
My mom- she wears anything for fun and always looks beautiful in it.
I love all the clothes from J crew
I look to any one who dresses with humour, creativity and confidence and cheer:
“La vie est trop courte pour s’habiller triste”
Life is too short to dress sadly!
Tracey says
Hey Metalia! Welcome!!
I’ve always loved Sally Bowles – I love night-time wear and cabaret stuff, and fishnets, and sequins, and baubles, and feathers… I’m a mother twice over myself, and Montreal is such a fashion-forward city, so I’m always going classic with a good fit (and black) with a bit of “dare-ya” funk whenever I can. But you can’t always wear that to the grocery store. (Or at least not at 10 AM…)
Jen says
Welcome to UrbanMoms!
Unfortunately, I have no style icons. Because? I have no style. That may sound harsh but it is mostly true. I have gotten better over the years but my mom, my role model, wore no make-up and never cared about fashion. I learned from her and by the time it mattered it was kinda too late. I know I love Banana Republic because it makes sense to me – classic and fits well. But truly I struggle.
So, in other words, I am looking forward to reading more here in hopes it will help me “get it”.
Ali says
Bonnie Parker.
YESYESYES.
Remember when Brenda and Dylan dressed up as Bonnie & Clyde for Halloween? I always wanted to do that. always.
Amanda says
I too have to stop watching Gossip Girl. It’s so awful(ly addictive). My fashion muses also include Joan Holloway since she has given me a new appreciation for my ample gluteus maximus and shown me that it can be a real ASSet. See what I did there? Oh, so punny.
Also, welcome to UrbanMoms!
