Remember the 5 year old holy terror I live with? In case you forget, or haven’t heard about him, then check out my other post “A letter from Santa“.
Up until a few days before Christmas Ryley’s behaviour had shown great improvement due to the letter he received from good old Santa Claus – however, when he discovered there was no chicken noodle soup all hell broke loose!
Ryley: “Mommy can I have some chicken noodle soup for lunch?”
Mean mommy: “Sorry bud, there is none.”
Ryley: “Yes there is! You bought some the other day!
Mean mommy: “Yes but that was all eaten.”
Ryley: “Get me some chicken noodle soup!”
Mean mommy: “I told you there is none, so please stop yelling and maybe think of something else you would like.”
Ryley: “No! I want chicken noodle soup!”
Mean mommy: “I told you there isn’t any!”
Ryley: “Oh yeah well I am going to call 911! You are so mean!”
Mean mommy attempting not to laugh: “You only call 911 for real emergencies such as a fire, or a bad guy, or if for some reason mommy won’t wake up……” (don’t I wish!).
Ryley pouting: “Well I want Chicken noodle soup. That’s an emergency!”
Mean mommy laughing: “No it isn’t.”
Ryley: “Yes it is and I’m gonna call 911!”
Mean mommy walking away to check on screaming babies upstairs who had woken up from their nap – probably due to Ryleys ranting and screaming. “Yeah okay have fun with that.”
Okay, thinking back, perhaps that wasn’t the best comment to make to an angry 5 yr old but it was all I had at the moment – and I have yet to be nominated for any Best Mommy Award so bite me. I didn’t really think he would call 911 – besides as far as I knew he didn’t even know how to dial the phone.
So as I, the Mean mommy for having no chicken noodle soup in the house (gasp!) went about getting the baby’s out of their cribs and changed I heard an angry voice talking. Ryleys voice. For some reason I knew this wasn’t good.
Now if I hadn’t had six children prior to the twins my first reaction would have been to scream “HOLY SHIT!” Drop a baby and go running downstairs to the kitchen. Fortunately for Tanner and Thatcher that wasn’t the case. I quickly (and I cannot emphasize the “quickly” enough) gently placed Thatcher in the crib with Tanner and then ran down to the kitchen just to in time to see Ryley placing the phone back on the receiver.
Nervous mommy: “Ryley what are you doing? Were you talking to someone on the phone?”
Ryley: “I told you I was gonna call 9 -” The phone rang and I knew, I just knew!
Really nervous mommy: “Hello?”
Dispatch lady: “We just had a call from this number is there an emergency?”
HOLY SHIT!
Really embarrassed mommy: “Oh my gosh I am so sorry – my 5 yr old son phoned….”
Irritated Dispatch lady: “You really should have your phones were he can’t reach them.”
REALLY? If you knew Ryley than you would know how it impossible that would be!
Really embarrassed mommy: “Okay sure, I’ll – .”
Dispatch lady: “Does he understand you only call 911 for emergencies?”
Really embarrassed mommy: “Yes, but apparently having no chicken noodle soup in the house was an emergency – to him at least.”
Silence.
A quiet chuckle, then real laughter. The dispatch lady was human after all.
Dispatch lady. “Okay then, have a nice day – and please move your phones out of his reach.”
After hanging up the phone I wanted to scream at Ryley, but when I looked over at him sitting on the couch watching Treehouse, I couldn’t. He looked too cute, and after all, he did give me new material for my blog. So instead, I told him never to call 911 again unless it was a real emergency and went over AGAIN with him what a real emergency is.
So after that whole mess you didn’t think I forgot about Thatcher and Tanner did you? Of course I didn’t. When I went up to get them they had a lovely surprise for me. Remember how I told you I gently put Tanner in the crib with Thatcher? Well I hadn’t finished changing them so they were only wearing their diapers – well they had diapers on when I left the room – but that my friends is for another post.
Until next time,

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

That huge intergalactic ball they drop in Times Square every New Years is actually a transponder sent by aliens to warp our brainwaves and get us to reflect on the past year. Sadly, they shake their heads as we repeat our mistakes in the proceeding year and mutter to themselves as they have to beam down their emissary yet again to repeat the whole process year after year. This clearly explains Dick Clark’s agelessness.

Thanks, Gillian! Since then, she has not watched him. I don’t know if she will really stick to what she said, but she has until now. She suggested that my son write apology letters to the 911 dispatcher and the officers who responded. To me, this seems ludicrous. It’s quite a shame when people overreact so badly. She will never have kids of her own, and that’s probably a good thing judging by the way she handled this situation. Anyway, kids will be kids, and you have to have your own before you can fully appreciate and understand all these wacky things they do. Could he a long wait for her to come around again.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
MLM Training says
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
Google External Keyword Tool says
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hi Bobby – anyone with kids knows that at six you take the phone in the bathroom with you ….lol. Her reaction is totally because she has not been through it herself with her own little darlings, I don’t think you can get your point across but definetely will be able to sit back and smile smugly when her kids do it one day:) I know it’s hard but try not to take it personally. I have four “Damiens” at home all under the age of eight – every day is an adventure and another rollercoaster ride – some days the hills are bigger than others!!
Bobby (a dad) says
Hello. I just want to get some opinions from you all. My 6 year old son was with his great aunt today. While she was in the bathroom, he called 911, and the police showed up. He explained that the phone is a “Vtech” like his computer, and that he was playing with it. He said he didn’t know it was a real phone. Long story short, my aunt hugely overreacted, and now she is acting like my son is Damien or something. She said she can’t watch him anymore because he can’t be trusted. Compared to other 6 year olds I have encountered, he is a good kid, and he hadn’t done anything terrible any other time she has watched him. I tried to get the point across that he is a kid, and kids do these things. She is just not having it. She has not had kids herself, so she doesn’t understand. How can I get my point across and get her to understand? Thanks!!

I was just looking for this info for a while. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, at last I got it in your web site. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this kind of informative web sites in top of the list. Normally the top sites are full of garbage.

Julie I am so surprised this hasn’t happened before! I am hoping at doesn’t happen again but who knows what the children will do in this house lol
Chantel says
Annabelle you are so right about the phones. Children do need to be able to reach them – fortunately (or unfortunately) Ryley could reach it no matter where I put it – however, some of my other younger kiddies don’t quite have the same climbing skills:)
Chantel says

Ha, Gillian I think I’ll be taking my phones to the bathroom as well:)

My son Reese called 911 just yesterday “just to say hi”. I was in the bathroom upstairs when the phone rang and to my suprise it was the Niagara Regional Police calling to find out if there was an emergency and to inform me that my kids had dialed 911. Of course like Chantel I was mortified and went over when to call 911 with Reese (and all the other boys to be on the safe side). I now take the phones in the bathroom with me:))
Julie says
uh-oh. but i’m sure you’re not the first parent to have that happen to. i’m just surprised it hasn’t happened before!
i’m just afraid to read your next post!
Annabelle says
I guess you will always have extra soup on hand! My 4 year old called 911 last year. We were discussing when to call 911 during dinner and a while later while everyone was asleep 2 police officers were at my door. I had no idea he had called. The next morning he confessed and said he just wanted to try it out. He then left the phone off the hook so they couldn’t reach me — so some officers arrived to check things out.
Re the comment “keeping phones where kids can’t reach them”. That is ridiculous. Sadly, a few of my other kids have “accidentally” called 911 in the last 13 years and I heard that comment too. Kids need to be able to access a phone. What if there is a real emergency? I would feel better knowing my child can call for help.
Sara says
ummmm…..I did it when I was little. My brother was chasing me around like a monster from Scooby Doo…so I called. And then they called back and it is a constant ring…just when my mom walked in the door!!!!! Let’s say I felt that call for awhile after – or my butt did.
Sonya says
Chantal! Thanks for my morning smiles! Good to see you take things in stride! And that the 911 woman had a sense of humour!
