A few months ago I became concerned about one of the
twins. In my opinion Tanner didn’t seem
to be hearing properly. Others kept
telling me not to worry, he would be fine, he probably had selective hearing
like most of the men in this house, but I knew something wasn’t right.
His identical twin Thatcher had begun to babble the typical
nonsense that babies do, but Tanner simply made grunting type noises and while
his brother said “dada” he continued to just smile his beautiful smile that
melts my heart. As much as I tried I
couldn’t get past the thought that something wasn’t right and I was
correct. After seeing our paediatrician and
having an initial hearing test it was confirmed that noise wasn’t being heard
at all in Tanners right ear.
I could have freaked, but actually I was somewhat calm, and relieved
to know that I wasn’t crazy or imagining things.
A few weeks ago Tanner had another hearing test and although
it was determined that he isn’t hearing from the right ear the results were
confusing and not entirely reliable, so he will be seeing another specialist in
a few weeks so we can hopefully get more of an understanding of what exactly is
going on, and if he is in fact fully deaf in the one ear.
A week ago Tanner said “Mama.” and I cried. Never had I thought my baby’s first word
would evoke such a reaction. I suppose
even after eight children there are still a few surprises left in store for me.
Have you ever had to deal with hearing loss in an infant or child? What reaction did you have?
Until next time,

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I wondered about Oliver once… but that was just the ‘selective hearing’ you were describing earlier. (Heh.) But it’s soooooo good that you followed your instincts – I hope you get a full answer soon, so you can move forward for little Tanner, and whatever help he’ll need.
Must have been sweet to hear your boy say “Mama”… *sniff*
Merry Christmas, Chantel!

Mom always knows best. I too am glad that you went with your gut on this. My 6 month old daughter had suspected hearing loss, and when her pediatrician could not get her to respond on her left side, she made a referral to audiology (Alberta is one of the provinces that does not do routine hearing tests at birth). She also had torticollis and positional plagiocephaly on her right side, because she always turned that way. As it turns out, she had selective hearing and her hearing tested out a-okay in both ears (audiologist said she was probably tuning out her brother, lol!). Babywearing, positioning, and exercise has fixed the torticollis and the flat spot on her head is slowly correcting itself. We shall determine if she needs a head shape clinic referral for a helmet when she goes in for her 6-month check in early January…The audiologist actually said that he prefers if the peds. over-refer if mom has concerns. Better safe than sorry. I hope you get answers for Tanner soon. It’s amazing what they can do for hearing loss nowadays, and kiddies are very adaptable. Hang in there, mama. xx

I am fully deaf in my left ear, they suspect since birth. My parents didn’t find out until I was three and broke my right arm, I picked up the telephone with my left arm and put it to my right ear… which was a surprise when I told them, oh no mommy, I can’t hear out of that ear… I was taken to many specialists but in reality the best thing is that I have just learned to adapt.
