I just got back from a great weekend in NYC. My mom and I went to celebrate a milestone birthday for her and a last hurrah for me before I’m shackled down with another kid.
The weekend was busy, but still relaxing and free of responsibilities. We ate amazing food, saw some fab shows on broadway, did a lot of walking and ran into Elmo of all people.
One major observation was that New Yorkers LOVE pregnant people. Unlike here in TO complete strangers (and not crazy people) were congratulating me, blessing me and telling me to treat the baby well. There were no crazy comments, questions or unsolicited advice, these people were genuinely excited for me. It was very refreshing!
The best use of my giant pregnant belly was getting broadway tickets at the TKTS Discount Booth in Times Square. After waiting in line for an hour to get tickets for Once (the most amazing musical I’ve ever seen), the security guy told me that I shouldn’t have waited and that if I came back the next day he would just wave me through. So, of course we took advantage and returned the next day. I walked right past the snaking line up, talked to security and he waved me through. We were in and out with tickets in hand for The Assembled Parties in under 5 minutes. Ah-mazing!
Another little tip, if you happen to find yourself 8 months pregnant and in NYC – The Marriott Hotel in Times Square has a nice clean bathroom that you can use. It’s only open in the mid afternoon and early evening, but it’s a lifesaver.
Also, The Gap at 34th and Broadway has a maternity section. It’s not huge, but I bought some nice summer staples to complete my wardrobe.
We stayed in Tribeca, which is like The Beach, Rocesvalles and Queen West on steroids. Lot’s of hipster parents with super cute kids, strollers and dogs. So of course that means great brunch spots and expensive, trendy kids boutiques. I stumbled upon Shoofly and just had to buy the cutest Tribeca T for my L’il E. He looks so cool with it on.
Anyway our trip to NYC was everything I had hoped it would be and I’ve come home feeling refreshed and ready to face the remaining nine weeks of my pregnancy.
Do you have any NYC reccos? Where did you go for your last hurrah?
