My first blog was about the birth of my son Travis, so to make things fair; I thought my second should be about the birth of my wee-man Rory.
The differences between the two births were drastic. Travis was old school: water broke, went to the hospital, wife did majority… ok, all of the work, and 5 hours later we had a baby. Rory, on the other hand, was like me in the hot-tub…don’t wanna come out.
We were expecting Rory on February 18th, but by February 28th, 2011, it was apparent this little library book of love did not want to come out. He preferred to vacation in Charlene’s womb than greet the world. After a checkup at the hospital, we soon found out our little guy had done a Nadia Comaneci-like flip, and was now the wrong way around. In order for our baby to see the day of light, a C-section had to be performed.
I find it a little weird when the doctors give you the exact time you’ll be having the baby. If only delivery services could be this reliable. How is it possible that having a baby delivered through a C-section is easier than getting a refrigerator delivered? I digress.
As my wife went into the operating room to be prepped, the doctor informed me on how the procedure works. He also informed me on all the things that could go wrong. As I sat and prayed for good health, I was asked to go into the room.
I walked in, nervous and anxious (considering the seriousness of the talk I just had with the doctor), and couldn’t believe what I saw. I felt like I had walked into a stag and doe party. Don’t get me wrong, the doctors and nurses were totally professional, but there was music blasting, and phones going off. I swear I saw a crown and anchor table in the corner. I thought at any moment the groom’s drunk uncle was going to ask me to buy raffle tickets to win an oversized bottle of rye.
My nervousness was instantly gone. Their laid back attitude and professionalism put us both at ease. The other thing I remember was how fast it went down. Within 20 minutes, we were parents for a second time. We didn’t end up winning a big bottle of booze…but we did end up taking home a 9 pound bundle of love we named Rory.
On a side note: I really pushed for the name Rory. My wife loved the name but was nervous people wouldn’t be familiar with it. I was persistent and told her everyone will get it. Before we left the hospital someone asked, “What’s this little guy’s name?” When we told her, she said “Oh Maury!”
Yeah that’s right, Maury…we decided to name our baby after a talk show host who hands out DNA tests five days a week.

I had my first baby via emergency c-section and I agree the procedure is very relaxed. I was a pretty out of it, but I remember hearing the surgeon and nurses talking about chicken and what they had done over the weekend. I was lying there thinking….um…guys are you paying attention? Sadly the recovery is no stag and doe.
