The 2010 Winter Olympics are here and I am excited!
Yes, I know some of you do not support the Olympics because it is always so controversial. The cost overages that will eventually rest on us Vancouver taxpayers, the major inconveniences/traffic issues during the games, the obvious human and social issues it raises being here, and not to mention all those stories about the integrity of the IOC. As a Therapist in healthcare, I too have issues with spending so much on the games, when I see so many shortages and staff cuts in healthcare and the school system.
But now that the 2010 Winter Olympics & Paralympics are here – I am going to try to be a part of it as much as possible and try to attend anything and everything I can with the family. I feel that this is an once-in-a-lifetime chance for our family to be a part of something that brings the WHOLE WORLD together.
We are also BIG sports fans and BIG fans of our Canadian teams!
The other day someone scoffed at the fact that a commercial had Olympic athletes eating McDonald’s. I asked them why they thought it was so unbelievable. They proceeded to suggest that real elite athletes do not eat McDonald’s and this was just a false marketing ploy. I proceeded to then inform this person of the quality and high standards that McDonald’s has for their food, and then I remembered a tweet on twitter of how McDonalds first started being a part of the Olympics.
McDonald’s commitment to the Olympic Movement began in 1968, when the company airlifted hamburgers to athletes in Grenoble, France after they reported being homesick for McDonald’s food.
Upon reading further, I also found the out that there are 3 on-site McDonald’s restaurants that are made up of the McDonald’s Olympic Champion Crew.
Which are 300 top-performing McDonald’s employees from across Canada that have been selected as “the best of the best” and will experience the Games like no other. As McDonald’s Olympic Champion Crew, they will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of serving the world’s best athletes, coaches, officials and media at the three on-site McDonald’s restaurants while also attending select Olympic events and participating in cultural activities.
Wow! Another reason to encourage the children to work for McDonald’s when they are old enough. Again, I am in amazed at how brilliantly they treat their employees, especially their front-line crew.
Hopefully I will be able to visit one of the McDonald’s restaurants at the Olympics and if I see any Olympic athletes in line, I will definitely be asking them what their favourite McDonald’s menu items are and reporting back to that certain someone who did not think any Olympic athletes ate at McDonald’s.

Hi Smartmama,
I think it is great that you posted this! This is why we are here. Definitely if you look at menu items at McDonald’s you can find foods that are healthly. Like many restaurants, you have a choice of menu items that can range in calorie count & fat count.
McDonald’s recognizes this and has put items on the menu that ARE healthier than your average fast food choices. The problem most people do is assume that everything is unhealthly when it is the choice that the individual makes when they order.
Of course the Mediterranean salad will vary from the Big Mac in fat and calorie count but you can be assured that the meat in the Big Mac is 100% beef. McDonald’s uses the best quality ingredients in everything they make from their apples to their sandwiches.
I guess the information depends on the items that you choose to eat.
Personally, I find that moderation is the best for all food choices. We all need a fat in our diet and we also need calories for energy.
Body builders have a very regimented diet and I am aware of one who completely cut out fat and experienced extreme mood swings because of it. I also know a body builder who eats McDonalds but he will eat double the meat and have only one part of the bun. Body builders have a very different diet than the average person so I can understand why he would choose not to eat McDonald’s. Also as an average healthy person with a normal diet, I would not choose to eat such a regimented diet that a Body Builder would eat.
If you are looking for information on nutrition and ingredients on individual menu items at McDonald’s, you can find that at this link.

OK, so I thought twice before posting but the reality is that my 15 year old son won’t eat at McDonalds. He is on a body-building program with an extremely healthy eating regimen. He has done his research and McDonald’s food is definitely on the no list. By the way, he can give details on why the food is so unhealthy, right down to the fat count and the calorie count.
If you have research to disprove his findings, please let me know. I will certainly pass it along.

I worked for McDonald’s as a young teen ~ fry girl who progressed to breakfast specialist! I loved it! They were so pro-communiyt building (even back in the 80s) and took us some GREAT team building excursions (horseback riding, movies etc). Later on, as my retail career expanded, all my employers looked at my resume and basically told me that they hired me because of McD’s experience. I have since moved on, but remember those years fondly and will encourage my 2 boys to work there (if possible). PS do elite Olympic athletes eat at McDonalds? You bet! Who doesn’t! What a yummy indulgence for anyone to enjoy…
