Favourite little guy walks in to my class this morning, chest puffed out, little squishy nose in the air, all 3 feet of him and says “Today is my birthday. I am 5.”
I could not believe it. He was born on the exact day I separated. September 6, 2006.
I gave him a big hug. I ADORE this little superhero. Even moreso now.
The art class made him a card. At the end of the class I brought out some cupcakes that I just happened to have on hand.
“CUPCAKES? No way! Are we going to get cupcakes every time someone has a birthday in art class?” He shouted.
‘No, I whispered, this is special.’
I winked at him. ” Today, I am 5 too.”

Happy birthday! Here’s to celebrating endings as the beginnings they are meant to be. I’ve got a slice of black forest cake here, lady, and I’m raising it to you!
