Yesterday by 12 noon all 10 campers and their families were gone.
They had spent a few hours in the garden looking at all the beautiful artwork their children had created.
They heard their stories. And watched their production. Many hugs and thank you s and then they were gone.
And then suddenly silence fell all around us.
It was not a regular silence.
It was the beautiful silence after fantastic noise.
There was freedom too.
My daughter and I could now do anything we wanted- swim with out high vigilance, read, eat quietly (oh yes and clean the place but that could wait an hour) .
It was freedom after a week of restraint and careful consideration of everything, fun, safety and getting projects done, meal for 12 and of what we were doing and doing next.
This is the beauty of hard work.
I could see how hard my daughter worked all week. And I could see how much sweeter it made this ‘after’ part.
Perhaps of all the things we can teach our children this is in the top 5. It is that feeling of satisfaction that comes from the before, the during and the after in life. There is happiness in the relative. And the challenge of pushing through the hard bits and putting yourself into something completely even when you don’t always want to.
My daughter got her hands really dirty this week. I could feel how pleased she was with herself and how beautiful she found the before the during and the after.
And it made it so sweet for me.
