I write quite a bit about how lucky Will and I are to have our ‘people’. This amazing network of friends and family who have become ‘our’ family. People like my siblings, my kick ass friends, Will’s ‘girls’ Sarah and Kelly and their parents, our neighbourhood peeps, the people I play paddle with, my defunct book club, my new book club. It’s vast and at times when I’m feeling stressed out, I think about them and I feel assured that we’re okay. We’re cool.
This week, my very good friend Lindsay (taker of almost all the awesome shots of Will that I post here) had to put down part of her family. Her dog, Brody. She wrote an amazing Facebook post – here is part of it.
And although he was not around long enough to see my own children grow – as promised, he did se
e many other dear children in my life grow up, and taught all of those children how wonderful a dog can be.
Brody was one of Will’s peeps for a time. And he did just that, taught him how awesome a dog can be. Dogs are amazing. I had a dog for the better part of my first 30 years and I can’t wait to be able to share that experience with Will. But that won’t be for a long time. For now, we are dog sitters and visitors and we’re totally down with that.
We get Tallulah..
And Darby (with Kiki and Guinny missing the pic)
Phoebe – (we do small dogs too).
and Rocky!
Then there’s Asta. I started my fairly annual Christmas with Asta the year I got pregnant with Will. She and I would stroll in High Park for half an hour and then enjoy leisurely three hour naps on the L-shaped sofa (in between my all-day morning sickness). Our bond was formed.
I love to watch Asta with Will
– except for last Christmas, when Asta ate Woody the Cowboy’s head.

This was their first Christmas….
And this was last year – where they learned to play together significantly better…
I’m really looking forward to what this Christmas brings….since Asta is now a big sister. Yup. Two dogs.
I’m sensing a few more heads will go missing and maybe Will won’t be the only one peeing in inappropriate spots. But regardless, I’m excited because to me, a house is truly complete with a dog in it. And I love my friends for sharing theirs with us.
What about you guys? Dogs? Do you have one…are they in the plans? We’re always available to dog sit!
* this one is for you Brody. We’ll miss your wagging tail and happy face! x

i cannot do a dog. i have had it up to “here” with cleaning up human poop and a dog can’t be toilet trained 🙂 i will pet your dog, play with your dog, love your dog and walk your dog but i will not deal with the poop. i have a neighbour dog whom i love dearly and that is good enough for me.

We have Alice, beagle spaniel mix, who turned 13 in August and still looks not a grey hair over 10. She was our first “child” and got pushed to the back of the bus when Hudson and Tasman came along. But she doesn’t hold a grudge, still greeting me when I come home like a balloon about to burst.
And now the boys can’t get enough of her and with time waning and the inevitable a couple of years away, we know there are lessons coming. But for now we hold her extra long, put up with some nacho cheese smelling paws and let her sleep on the bed, sprawled like a furry starfish.
She is not just man’s but all of our best friend.
