I have birthed a love bug.
Seriously.
Besides his princess fetish, I have a rough and tumble boy who is a full and total love bug. He’ll stop what he’s eating to race over with a ‘BIG HUG MOMMY’ and lay one on me.
He hears my voice in the hall at daycare and races out for a massive hug and he’ll whisper, ‘I missed you today mommy.’
And his new line is ‘I love you mommy’. He says it, literally 30 times a day. I’ll be sitting on the can and he’ll run over with a hug and an ‘I love you’. (well first he’ll ask if I’m going poop). In the backseat of the car, I switch the cd for the umpteenth time and he says thanks and I love you.
I remember when my first serious boyfriend and I used to say that to each other all the time, and my mom, likely holding back a barf, said ‘honey it really loses it’s meaning when you end every sentence with it.’
And yeah. She was right. Look I’m not complaining but I wonder – does he even know what he’s saying? On the flipside when he’s a few years older and yells ‘I hate you’ – will he know what that means?
What do you think – is this kid just totally over the moon in love with me OR (my vote is here) did he notice me swoon the first time he said it and realized that he can get anything he effing wants by saying that to me???
Are you living with a bug??

I thinK your little man is learning how to make his main lady swoon and if it gets him a few extra gummy worms… Oh well

I expect its both – but I think its likely mostly heartfelt … especially when the hugs go with it. He probably knows how good it makes him feel when you say it to him right?
I can’t wait til my little guy can say that to me! I hope he says it as much!
I think I love you means I love you, and I hate you means I’m mad at you.

Andrew was (and still is sometimes) the same. He absolutely does it because he knows we love it, but I think he does too. I agree with what you said, enjoy it while he is doing it and hopefully it will help delay the ” I hate you Years”.

Cheryl – your comment made me smile so big! Thanks!

I want to swoon myself just reading this 🙂 I think regardless of whether he “gets” what he’s saying the fact that he’s doing it to make you happy is BEYOND awesome. He’s completely delicious and I hope you get a ton of mileage from this 🙂

It’s so nice though… I think they do notice how we swoon, and it feels good to say, too. Nice all around. Especially when they’re so wee. (Mine are love bugs too – it gets even better, when they learn to space the I love you’s out!!)

I think he knows what it means or else my Andrew has me under his thumb too….when he goes to bed he whispers in my ear “Mommy, I loooooove you” and he whispers right in my ear that it tickles and we both laugh….my 6 yr old still tells me he loves me and gives me a hug and kiss when I leave him at the playground in the morning….it’s a boy thing…my daughter couldn’t care less and only tells me she loves after I have been in her room 14 times to say good night…she on the other hand uses it for her own good! Enjoy it – because it’s frickin AMAZING!!!
