Last Friday Drake’s latest album VIEWS was released and hit the charts running. I was one of those quick to download the album as soon it was released. As a Drake fan, it’s incredible to see his career progress and this album seems to be more than an unwavering love letter to Toronto, it’s seems more personal.
On the eve of the album release, Drake was interviewed by New Zealand born Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe exclusively on Apple Music’s OVO Sound Radio. This interview was highly anticipated as the artist rarely does interviews with media or anyone for that matter. Drake has always been someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and appears to have a virtual shield of armour but on this night he opened up and left that armour at the door.
The interviewed touched upon his working relationships and who he trusts or not and yes, his love for Toronto. He proves that focus, dedication, and hard work reaps in the success. He has no qualms about saying that he earned his position and gives credit where credit it due.
But what I loved most about this interview is his touching and funny answers to Lowe’s questions about his parents view of all this.
Lowe had joked with Drake about how his mom gets Google alerts about him whenever he gets mentioned in the news. He asked Drake what it’s like for him when his mom finds out little bits of his life stumbling over findings through social media.
You can pretty much hear Drake’s smile over the airways. “It just takes a lot of reassurance. You gotta reassure that you’re good,” said Drake. She had chatted with her son about how she learned that he and another artist, The Game, were arguing because one was building a new pool. Drake laughed and said,”My mom is always down with the passa passa, you know, the talk. She gets all the passa straight to her phone and she’ll ask me but I’m always very reassuring. My goal was to maoeuver my way through all of this in the most positive way possible.”
Lowe continued to ask Drake what the best piece of advice his mom ever gave him.
“My mom’s thing is a 72 hour rule,” says Drake. “It happened years ago when it was the first time just when the internet, blog, gossip culture started happening and they had edited some picture of me and my cousin. I thought people would believe the edit. My mom said to me ‘you know what? you’ll go to sleep tonight and you’ll wake up and it will still bother you .Then you’ll go back to sleep again and you’ll wake up again and it will bother you a little less. But then on the third day you’ll wake up and someone else will have done something else that is stupid enough that everyone else will totally forget.'”
Drake mentioned that he’s learned to control his emotions for 2 or 3 days, based on this advice his mom gave him. “That’s why I don’t run to social media and start reacting about my anger or frustration. I let it sit and it always goes away.”
Great advice!
On that note, we wish Drake’s mom, Sandi Graham, a very Happy Mother’s Day!
