I was driving to work today and Q107 in Toronto was playing American Pie and talking about how it was 52 years ago today that Buddy Holly died in a plane crash. Sidenote – They also noted that a young Waylon Jennings was on the tour and when Buddy heard he was on the bus, he said ‘i hope the heater breaks’ to which Waylon replied, ‘I hope your plane crashes.’ Try living with that your whole life! No wonder he drank so much!
Buddy Holly was the music of our family road trips. Buddy and Johnny Cash. My parents, four kids, a german shepherd, all off our crap for two weeks, likely a carton of smokes and a slew of Buddy Holly 8-tracks packed into a four door Oldsmobile! We knew all the words to every song and my parents likely blasted it to drown out the noise of us fighting or my brother barfing.
When I was young I liked the fast ones…Maybe Baby, Peggy Sue etc. As I’m older and still a big Buddy fan. I can appreciate the beauty of the slower ones like True Love Ways and feel like some of his songs could totally be on the radio today like Not Fade Away.
So enjoy these songs. I’m going to and visualize our family road trips. For kicks, I’m going to try and picture what one would be like now….THAT would be a great reality show.
What songs did your family cruise to??
RIP Buddy Holly!

I remember alot of Beach Boys music, and of course, Kenny Rogers. Dad would torture us and put a little Roger Whittaker on too! Thank God we never went far on those trips!!! For road trips with my 2 boys, it was always Dave Matthews playing, there and back. The boys are nearly grown up now and the 3 of us still have great memories from camping trips and we can all sing the entire Crash album. Such sweet summer memories!!

My dad used to grill us on the classical music – from what’s that instrument, to who wrote that piece… ack. I kinda loathe classical music pretty hard. ANGST! STAB!!

As a kid, our road trips were: Beatles with our Dad, he grilled me all the time. Kids songs with my Mom as my brother was 9 years younger than I. Goodnight Irene, The Travelers sing for kids. Although, probs I don’t remember Raffi (except that I know every work…oops).
The most important thing is singing. I think it’s so important to sing with your family when you are a kid.

I remember our trip back to Boston, and our compromise with your Dad over radio stations….at least he compromised.

country music. I kid you not. all country, all the time. Pure torture, considering we drove from Saskatchewan to Toronto (and back) every stinking summer.
I can pretty much sing you any country song that was popular in the mid-late 90s. Twang included.

Ack.

So good!! We listened to a lot of 50’s and 60’s music in our house, growing up. We didn’t do long trips in the car much… I always preferred the jazz to the classical music (classical always made me feel punished somehow – still does in a way).
Nice to have such god family memories like these!!

We cruised from BC to Waterloo every other year. My sister, my Dad and moi. It was always country country country and it was awesome! My personal faves were Hoyt Axton and of course the Kenny Rogers / Dolly Pardon duet album. SO freaking good. My Dad still knows how to surprise me and bring me to tears on occasion – he bought me a Hoyt Axton vinyl for my birthday last year – it is still one of my all time fave’s. Reminds me of all the amazing things we saw cruising across the country. We even saw Old Faithful one year – we almost got eaten by bears once….ahhh memories:)
