I’ve worked in media for about ten years. During that time, celebs come and go to our stations. I’ve breathed the same air as Marcus Mumford. I laughed with Bono. I danced in a booth with my 5 month old kid while Ray Lamontagne sang. I’ve never, in all of those years, asked to have my picture taken or meet any of them personally. It’s just not my thing. Until today.
Two weeks ago I got a request to book interview space and technical help for a Brooke Shields interview. I immediately messaged my friend Colleen who was doing the interview and said, ‘I have to meet her.’
It wasn’t because she killed it on Friends. Or because of how much I loved Suddenly Susan. It wasn’t to say how jealous I was of her when she was Mrs. Andre Agassi but how she totally upgraded with Chris Henchy. (all of these are so very true…).
I just wanted to meet her to say THANK YOU.
Thank you for being brave enough to be, really, the first famous person to bring postpartum depression into the mainstream.
Thank you for sharing your deepest lows in your book about PPD, Down Came The Rain.
Thank you for making me feel like this could happen to anyone.
Thank you for giving a voice to us who needed to take drugs (and still do) and helping to fight the stigma against them. (Sidenote: thanks for calling out Tom Cruise on his irresponsible talking out on a subject that he knew shit about).
Thank you for inspiring me to write about my own fight and to share my struggles openly and honestly.
Thank you for being a public face to a subject that so many moms struggle with in private.
I’m not sure I articulated all of this in the two minutes I had to chat with her today, but it was my plan. And since she said in the interview that she still makes new friends, I’m sure I can explain all of this in more detail when Colleen and I meet up with her to go drinking. #squadgoals
*Sidenote, she was absolutely lovely…and hilarious talking about her girls. Celebs. They’re just like us. Only with a far better hair, wardrobe and makeup team as this picture suggests.*
