Almost Thanksgiving!! WOOHOO! It’s my most favourite holiday weekend of the year. I love the weather, the food, the extra day off work. It’s sweet.
BUT. Post Thanksgiving. It starts. The lead up to my TWO most UNfavourite holidays of the year. Hallowe’en and Christmas. Argh. I just do not like them. I do not like them in a box; I do not like them with a fox. (oh god…way too many bedtime stories).
I’ve never been a fan. Hallowe’en. Not a fan of costumes. Hate makeup. Can’t stand candy except for chocolate. When we were little, I was the victim of all the unfair candy trades. It went down like this. I’ll give you one aero bar for ALL of your rockets. Totally unfair but what’s a candy hater to do. I had to take it. I still walk around with black circles around my eyes because the thought of putting on foundation makes me slightly claustrophobic. I’m a mascara and lip gloss girl…and I’m 41.
When I had Will, I vowed to try. I didn’t want to pass on my odd loathing of the holidays that most people love the most! So, last Christmas I got a tree, decorations and went to see Santa. Hell I even hosted a Christmas cookie exchange! (was hell inappropriate to use there?). And while it wasn’t an instant win, I do realize that as Will gets older, I’ll see it through his eyes and maybe regain the magic of Christmas. Although, I will add my mother told me I was never really that nuts about all the whole thing…so not sure what I’m recapturing!
Hallowe’en? Well year one – I went big – two freaking costumes!
A. The Penguin…sure he looks happy…but REALLY, he was taking a crap.
B. The Pumpkin – How unimpressed is this kid? I can hear him saying ‘one minute I’m in a Led Zeppelin onezie and now I have a freaking orange beanie on my head?? WTF??’
Last
year…I started getting into it! I went to Target and on the hunt for the perfect costume! And I found it! I was totally pumped … Will…not so much…
This wasn’t a cute photo op. This was him the entire time the awesome, fantastic hotdog costume was on him!!!
So we went to option 2…which we picked up at a dollar store enroute to Montreal in the summer.
Happy as a clam. In his own clothes, with one token wig on to feel a part of Hallowe’en…
That’s my boy!!!
When he’s older…I’ll pass on my blackmail costume….where I dress all in black and pin a letter to my shirt! Yes!
Now fingers crossed he’ll share my loathing of Christmas and we can spend every December 25th on a beach in Cuba.

I must admit that I love Halloween…and candy too! It was always such a magical time of year and continues to be. My mom made our Halloween costumes from scratch. I can’t say that I do the same. No time, let’s be honest, no skill. I do decorate the house and make it very spooky. Whatever the holiday it’s a great excuse to bond with your kids and to see things from their magical eyes.

My kids would have a hard time choosing which they loved more, Halloween or Christmas! Our neighbourhood is awesome on Halloween – haunted houses, “drinks” served in your Thermos, full sized chocolate bars, TONS of trick-or-treaters. It is like a giant street party!
I adore Christmas. I feel like I get transported back in time to when things were simpler. When people sat around in front of the fire listening to the radio, eating fresh baked cookies, and visiting with family and friends. We go and cut down our own tree and have hot chocolate while decorating. Simple, calm and wonderful.

I love getting the costumes they SAY they want to wear, and then having to deal with melt-downs and tragedy when they change their minds on October 29th-ish. Oy.
But I do so love Christmas… kinda. It’s a hell of a lot of work. (There’s that word again… hee!)

Sara! investment in costumes means you have dress up inventory for years! Every house needs a tickle trunk for lousy grey November days. You must have one rubber chicken, two clown noses and at least one Hannah Montana wig- and no one will deny mom wearing it out on a Saturday night ……………….

Oh god Christine – that is SO funny (to let you guys in on the inside joke…Will ate a hotdog Saturday that didn’t quite agree with him…:)).
This year? Frig – I don’t know…maybe black track pants, purple shirt…and he’s Jeff Wiggle??
Christine says
Well we know he’s not a fan of hot dogs…
What’s he gonna be this year??
And I have a confession, friend of mine, Christmas is MY MOST FAVOURITE time of year.
(I may or may not have had my tree up Nov 22 last year…)
