From television shows that air the latest paparazzi photo of Hollywood starlets figures post-pregnancy, to Instagram posts that promise amazing, life-changing results from cleanses or body wraps—there seems to be the prevailing expectation across the media landscape for new moms, of any age, to return back to their figures that they had before pregnancy.
Former member of Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland, argues that there shouldn’t be such a preoccupation with one’s body for new moms. In the February issue of Parents, Rowland gave some motivational insight to all moms out there, “Write on your mirror in lipstick: ‘I had a baby. I’m a superhero’.”
There definitely needs to be more of this in the world, more women loving and accepting themselves.
The 33-year-old singer gave birth to her son with her husband Tim Weatherspoon. Titan Jewell, now 14 months old, was born in November at 7.5 pounds and he has been a wonderful addition to the family. Between being a full-time mom with the constant diaper changes and feedings, Rowland is also recording an upcoming album and filming the new reality show, a singing competition, called Chasing Destiny.
Rowland somehow manages to still find time in her busy schedule to exercise, but she has openly expressed that slimming down should be a goal that is set at a realistic pace, and on your own terms.
“It takes about a year to get the weight off. Don’t beat yourself up if it takes even longer,” she says.
The star has also revealed that she has been going through her own physical pressures with motherhood. After a breast augmentation, she dealt with a low milk supply and production which caused her to choose the formula route instead.
“I had my heart set on breastfeeding, but I wasn’t producing enough milk,” she openly said. “I got down on myself, which I think was mentally limiting my supply.”
Struggling to breastfeed is another common issue among new moms, holding a lot of stigma if you choose alternative routes. In spite of this, Kelly is adjusting to her new life with her new adorable addition to the family well, and continues to be an advocate for moms everywhere.
