The classic tale of Cinderella is one that we cherish and the smash hit Broadway musical gives it a fresh approach. This Rodgers & Hammerstein’s touring production has taken all the well-loved elements of the story but brings a few fun twists to the stage. Now playing until January 10 at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto.
Not wanting to sound totally cliche, but it truly does have something for everyone which makes this a popular choice for multi-generational families. Grandparents will love the familiar Rogers & Hammerstein style of musical with ample singing of tunes…by the way, if you’re not familiar with the songs you may have your little ones asking you to upload afterwards. Songs like Impossible, Ten Minutes Ago, In My Own Little Corner and Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful are my faves!
Parents will appreciate the perfect delivery that would be expected of a classic tale. The story line generally follows the one we knew but with a few updates. First, we learn how our main character got her name as well as the Prince Topher (short for Christopher) and the whole poor girl needs to marry Prince Charming theme gets a refresh. While he’s the catch of the kingdom and still searches for the one true love that fits the glass slipper. In the musical, Cinderella is still her traditional self that we’ve always seen but in the musical she’s empowered and believes in herself in a way that we’ve never seen before. In 2015, girls are understanding more about equality so in the show, Cinderella saves the Prince as much as he saves her.
This Cinderella story is about kindness, generousity and forgiveness. Cinderella takes control of her own destiny in way that previous stories told haven’t portrayed her. She definitely reflects more of a today’s young woman. She’s not a lady in waiting and not just a pretty face. She has a bit more fire to her personality when needed yet maintains the grace and Kaitlyn Davidson balances everything really well.
The Stepmother (Blair Ross) reminds me of Meryl Streep’s character in Devil Wears Prada with a sharp tongue and wicked ways while the step-sisters get a different treatment from what we’ve known in the past including one not being so evil after all!
There are several “life lessons” woven in the musical that I could overhear a mom and her daughter, who were seated behind us, discussing about how kindness has more power and how one voice can make a difference. It was nice to hear as the girl looked about 8 years old and this is the magic of a great show…inspiring conversation with the kids.
Full of magic, whimsy and humour, Cinderella is a must-see this season. Cinderella has something for everyone in the whole family: from dance scenes that make your heart melt and heroic battles against dragons and monsters, to costumes that truly make you believe in magic and songs you’ll be humming for weeks to come. This holiday season, take the whole family to see Cinderella, you won’t regret it!
