My original intention for this post was that it was going to be about all of the delicious gluten free and dairy/casein free (gfcf) food that I cook for the family that Cuyler refuses to eat – but is essentially all for his benefit.
I was going to post about how we have delicious barbeques with corn and grilled veggies – all gfcf – that we enjoy
He would rather just eat boring old pasta (that I sneak pureed sweet potato, carrots and squash into).
I was getting ready to re-heat the left over pasta for Cuyler but he was freaking out because he wanted McDonalds french fries. It’s all he wanted. He got stuck on it and when he gets stuck on something it can go on for hours. It’s hard to pull him out of the loop once his mind is on it. I lied to him several times to try and get him off of it.
McDonalds is closed on Sundays. “No they’re NOT Mom!”
They don’t make fries on Sundays. “Yes they DO Mom!”
I have no money for fries. “I have my Granda money” (my dad brings them $2 every weekend)
“But I don’t like nuggets.”
“Sorry dude. If you don’t eat chicken, you don’t get fries.”
It took some convincing but he did it.
HE FREAKING DID IT. He really wanted those fries.
My kid ate home made chicken.
This excites me so much! He didn’t gag. He ate the 2 pieces I gave him plus I got him to eat two more. Now I know he can and will eat chicken (if the motivation is right…)
After he ate his french fries he asked me if he was going to be bigger tomorrow because he ate chicken. I told him that yes, yes he was going to grow because he ate chicken. I’ll tell him anything to get him to eat healthy food.
God I hope that this is the beginning of better eating habits for this kid.
Fingers crossed.

Everything is a bribe no? I’m with Kath – I have no shame in it. And you shouldn’t either – go Cuy. The food is so difficult – Scotty is still on a diet of very few foods – if you can expand, however you need to, go for it!

lordy, yes. panko are bread crumbs aren’t they? having a duh moment….kind of like when i asked my raw food vegan friend if she can have crackers….oh, right…they’ve been baked even though they’re cold now!
Kath says
Uhhh, who says we don’t/won’t/shouldn’t bribe our kids? I must have missed that memo, because I do it! Money, treats, movies…if they want it badly enough, I have no shame: I’ll use it as a carrot to accomplish something distasteful to them 🙂

WOOOOOT!!!! That’s all kinds of awesome, lady! I’m crossing my fingers for you over here, too!

Thanks Julie! When UM had the McMoms program, Ali asked them specifically about the fries being gluten free. They assured her that they were. I questioned whether or not they have a dedicated fryer for the fries and they assured me they do!
The fries are the only thing on the McD’s menu that he can have.

Tracey – I use the Pane Riso Rice Bread crumbs. I used to make my own but convenience won out and I use these now. They are actually delicious. They work well on fish too!

Julie, my husband has eliminated gluten from his diet for about a year now… can’t use panko. (And I hate cornmeal.) I’m still “doing without” but it’s a pain in my culinary ass. Boo!!

if you’re feeling bad for bribing, there’s a biiiiiig lineup ahead of you for mother of the year. if someone tells you they don’t bribe then they’re big fat liars 🙂
tracey, use panko bread crumbs…light and crunchy!
i don’t know if you know or if it was just a taste thing he has but i believe mcd’s french fries have gluten in them…i’m not sure but you may want to check it out.

Crossing my fingers AND toes for you, lady! I think bribes and lies of this nature are totally necessary… it’s all about the outcome. I think you’re doing really well. And he ate it! Amazing!! (What kind of breadcrumbs did you use? I’m in the market… ack.)
