National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day is coming up on September 14th and we are 100% behind this initiative! The aim? Get the kiddies to prepare a favourite recipe for their family. And really what kids doesn’t love ice cream?
This homemade ice cream is easy to make, healthier than the packaged stuff and, best of all, TASTY! Blended bananas form the base of this cool dessert and kids can customize it with their favourite mix-ins. We like adding strawberries, which lend a sorbet-like texture to the mixture when frozen, or peanut butter with stirred in chocolate chips for a creamy treat that will satisfy any sweet tooth. Kids can put this cool dessert together completely on their own or with a little bit of help from an adult or older sibling.
We made two servings per flavour, but if you wish to make a larger batch, add one banana per serving as a rule of thumb. It is important to note that ripe bananas are best for this recipe, as they contribute a naturally sweet taste.
We used a blender to pulse our ingredients together and then froze the mixture to create our ice cream. Alternatively, if you have a food processor or a very powerful blender, you could cut up your bananas and freeze them beforehand so that you can mix and enjoy your ice cream on the spot.
Be sure to supervise your kiddos if they want to be in charge of mixing the ingredients and don’t forget to hashtag photos of their creations with #KidsTakeOverTheKitchenDay to show off their kitchen skills to all of your friends!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
Serves 2

2 ripe bananas, chunks
2 tbsp. peanut butter (or Wow Butter if you have peanut allergies)
¼ cup dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add bananas and peanut butter to a blender and blend/pulse until smooth.
- Transfer the mixture to a freezable container. Stir in chocolate chips and freeze for several hours or overnight.
- The ingredients can get stuck to the blender’s blades while blending, so use a spoon to loosen the mixture from the blades in between pulses.
- When you are ready to serve dessert, remove the containers from the freezer and let them sit for a couple minutes. Scoop into ice cream bowls and enjoy!
