October 15th. That’s 59 days away.
That’s exactly how many days until my first 5k.
I have been running the C25K program with two friends. We’ve been cheering each other on, getting each other through the rough patches, giving advice and pushing each other through it the program. We also challenge each other – so when I received this in my inbox I had to act:
BTW…I am registered for Trek or Treat. Did it online. Now it’s your turn guys!
A challenge?? Yes it was. I immediately registered for the Trek or Treat night run on October 15 in Oakville.
I can’t think of a better run for my first official race (haha…”race”…) It’s more like a fun run where there are there are prizes for top finishers but also for best costumes, and best “haunter” on the course. We’ll be stopping along the way for pictures and I’m sure our finish time won’t be that great.
But my time won’t be my priority.
Finishing will be. And having fun will be.
I have 10 days left in the C25K program. I cannot believe I am this far in it. And doing it. And I love it. This program is exactly what I needed to become a runner. I have tried running on my own in the past but this program sets you up for success.
For those runners who run 10k, halfs and marathons – kudos to you! I hope to join your ranks one day! For now I am proud to get through 6 and a half weeks wit only one bad run.
I had a horrible run on Sunday. I hated it. HATED it. Felt crummy. Legs were tired and I just didn’t want to be doing it. I remember one of my running-buddies telling me in the beginning that we would never have 2 bad runs in a row, so last night I was hopeful that the run would be better.
And it was. It was my best run so far – I felt great the whole time and could have kept going. Stretching afterward felt amazing and I decided when I got home that I would soak in an epsom salt bath.
I got home at 9pm, gramma (the babysitter) left, and the boys were still up. Ran my bath, dumped in the salt, grabbed my People mag and in I went. I read my magazine for 30 minutes. After about 15 I thought I better go get them ready for bed. But I didn’t. I kept soaking. I felt bad. Then that passed. I kept reading. It was such great “me time”. They weren’t bugging me or each other. I put them to bed eventually.
Oh – and since I have now finished all of the intervals in the program I would like to get a new playlist for my itouch with some good powerful songs to run to.
Any suggestion? What songs do you like to run to?

I just needs some fresh tunes to help me bang out that last quarter of the run that I will likely struggle with now that I’ll be on straight runs. Starting tomorrow. YIKES!

Good for you Christine! I have run a bunch of 5k’s and a 10k and never felt better. Now that my knees are bad it is difficult to run but I really miss it and crave the feeling afterward.
As for my favourite songs to run to. Here’s my list:
– Dynomite by Taio Cruz
– California Girls by Katy Perry
– Bullet Proof by La Roux
– I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
– Candyman by Christina Aguilerra
– Moulin Rouge
– If We Ever Meet Again by Timbaland
And one of the BEST – Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall
What are your faves?

Oh Jen start the C25K. It’s so easy. It’s online and if you have an ipod you can download programs for each week that keep track of the minutes for you.

Yeah Christine so happy your mojo returned and you were able to savour it even longer in the bath. ;).

“Beautiful Day” by U2 is always on my playlist for exercising.
I tried the C25K program last year, and ended up falling out of it after two weeks. The past few months I’ve taken up walking though, and can walk at a pretty brisk pace for 4 or 5 miles. Maybe it’s time to dust off the C25K program and try again, now that I’m in better shape.

Did you take a clinic? I’ve been really interested in taking up running (was actually going to start on my own tonight) but I’m not sure how to begin.

I did my 6.5 last night and by 5 I felt bad. Really bad. Didn’t want to keep going. Didn’t want to give up. I hit 5.25 and was just about to come out onto the public road, and I knew that I had to decide to stop, or to go, but giving up publicly was not an option. Then my ipod clicked over to “Gonja Babe” and it made me think of a happy day, watching the show ‘Weeds’ with a friend, and I started laughing – mid run. Concentrating on that moment I finished the last km and a bit without noticing I’d done it (or at least not breaking down into the fit of tears I felt coming on before the song started). That song will definitely stay on my playlist. “watcha gonna do when the rent comes due…” just had me start to power through.
So my playlist? Any song that makes me smile, has a good beat, and I can sing along (or mouth the words) and even do the random side step too. My running buddy (Liam on his bike) laughs that the ‘jazz hands’ come out and the silly grin washes over my face. “Aren’t you tired mom?” I am… but when my ipod starts screaming “FREAK OUT!” at me, how can I not FREAK OUT!
Congrats on all your success Christine!!! Best of luck on your race. Mine is on the 11th, and nervous is about the only way to describe how I feel. Again, failure is not an option… and unfortunately my competitive and compulsive self will be focused on time, and how fast everyone is going around me. I need to try and incorporate the word FUN into my vocabulary!
