Johnny Depp is the gift that just keeps giving.
The movie star dropped by Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane on Tuesday, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, to visit patients and their families.
Actor Stephen Graham joined Depp, also dressed as the pirate Scrum. Both are currently in Australia working on the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the series.
While Depp and Graham hoped to keep the visit on the down low, photos on social media sparked news coverage. But that didn’t stop the actors from meeting the children, staying in character as they took selfies with fans.
One little boy got particularly lucky. Max Bennett, who is seven and battling a rare neurological disorder, is a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan. Depp stopped to chat with him and his mother, Rachel, and Max even got a parting gift; “gold” coins with pirate heads engraved on them.
“He was taking his time to make sure he spoke to each and every one of them,” Rachel Bennett told ABC Australia. “He came on the condition that he wasn’t pushed along and crowded by adults and he could spend as much time as he wanted with the kids. He was here for the kids.”
While there, Depp filmed a short piece for Juiced TV, an in-house show made by the hospital for the children. The visit was organized by the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Even though Depp clearly has fans amongst the kids, he recently came under fire in Australia after allegedly smuggling his two Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, into the country in May. The dogs were sent back to the U.S shortly after Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce threatened to put the dogs down.
