The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is packed with friends, family and good cheer. No matter what your denomination, it is inevitably a time to unwind and celebrate with elaborately prepared meals full of good food and drink.
Inevitably, we roll into the New Year a few pounds up than we ended the previous one. To try and completely avoid the temptation of delectable treats would be fruitless, and to diet throughout inevitably ends in complete failure.
One of the only people I have seen successfully navigate their way through annual seasons of caloric land mines is my wife’s step mother. She has a very simple tactic and it works remarkably for her. If she tries a dessert or treat and it is not a 10 (on the 1 to 10 scale) she doesn’t eat it. Period. I am amazed at the willpower. To have a piece of chocolate cake sitting in front of you, decide it is only an 8, and then not eat more than a forkful.
Now, this method is clearly not for the faint of heart. You really need to have incredible self control to make it work – but it works for her. I would likely eat a ‘6’ piece of cake, and cut myself another slice for good measure.
What works for you over the holiday season? Do you just throw caution to the wind and go all out? Or is there some method you use to try and keep the scale neutral heading towards the New Year?

I get this rule. Besides adhering to it so steadfastly, I also spend my holidays “grazing” on everything yummy in the house to eat – but it’s all yummy, or else, why bother? But if the cake’s a 10, then I hope nobody else wants a piece, because mummy’s gonna eat it all. Believe it. 😉

LOL, how do you figure something is not a 10, come on 😉 I guess that’s try and taste kind of situation, but I’d never be able to stop myself after biting it haha

Well thanks to the gastrointestinal virus that hit me hard 2 days ago, I’m down 3 pounds. And so far the appetite really isn’t back yet. I know it’ll come so I’m hoping that I can end the holiday season where I started it, weight wise.
I’d like to try the rule of 10 but I’m afraid I’ll just think everything is a 10…
