I love to use letters in home decor.
I acquired a large wooden “O” from somewhere along the way when Oliver was born, but after his sister came, and their room became a shared space, I found a smaller one – one in the same size as the two she received as a gift. (Still looking for a use for the bigger one we still have somewhere, but I haven’t found one yet.)
Affixed with blue tacky-gummy stuff, because I am the laziest git the world has ever seen,
I swear.
Hers were cream coloured, with a yellow outline… and since I kinda hate yellow, I gave them a quick coat of pearl white acrylic paint instead. (Okay, I don’t hate yellow, but it’s just not my favourite. I like the way they look much better now.) I prefer initials to spelling-out-the-whole-name, but that’s just me. And ohmygod, I just love monograms on things like towels and sheets. Puuuurrrrrr…
Once I came upon a limited selection of letters in a store, and they were practically giving them away… so I looked and looked at them, and used my excellent Scrabble-winning skills *snort* to unscramble the best possible choice of words, and brought home these:
Pretty apt atop a bookshelf, I reckon.
Lately I’ve been working on this other house project, and had an application in mind. My late mother-in-law loved the place so much, and we had many, many discussions about renovations, and about decorating details for this space… there are subtle ways we’d all like to honour her memory – especially in this bathroom, since it was the room being worked on around the time of her death. We’d take pictures of the progress, and then walk across the way to show them to her on the iPad. (She loved the use of the dresser.)
I asked Martin and his sister what they thought about leaning some letters on the ledge over the window in there, and they both thought the idea was a good one… so the hunt was on.
Restoration Hardware often has these kinds of things available, but not always in the right size or finish. (Or price.) Which is why, of course, I always choose to begin such searches at the place that rhymes with Sinners. You can ALWAYS pay full price for something later, but WHY WOULD YOU if you can find something reasonable for a fraction instead?
So. Last week I rode the metro for 25 minutes to a far-away Sinners that often turns up lots of excellence for me (like this), and I prayed that the shopping gods would be kind.
And kind they were…
Antique bronze, 6″ tall. Perfect.
I hope they’ll make a quiet reminder of her, that also suits the details of the rest of the space. I believe they will. 🙂
Still on the lookout for a letter G for the kitchen… a bigger one… eyes peeled!!

i have wooden block letters in J, T and C but couldn’t find a D to save my life to complete our family set. so, they are put away until such time as i find one at a goodwill store or some such place! i love the letters!
