There’s much talk this time of year about how to incorporate the spirit of “giving” into our holiday plans. No matter how much we have or how little we have to get by, I’m hearing from families in all different income levels that want to do something special for someone in need. There are many shoebox type of projects like The Samaritan’s Purse, Shoebox Project, that give the opportunity for us to create a gift for a child, mom, family here in the city or over seas. Here’s another unique idea that is worth checking out.
The COOKIES TO CARE project is a great way to teach even the youngest of kids the basics of giving while teaching them the importance of good quality food. Well-known chefs across the city voluntarily give their time and resources to support this charity. With this particular holiday driven event the organization, Kids Cook To Care (KCTC), has teamed up with several celebrity chefs who have offered up a globally inspired cookie recipe for the season. We’re all baking anyway, so why not do something meaningful?
Here’s how it works…
1. Visit the kidscooktocare.com website to make a donation through kidscooktocare.com, your support helps sustain this incredible organization with much needed funds to keep the programs running. My son and I had recently participated in cooking a meal at a shelter, you can read about it here: Feeding The Shelter.
2. Confirm your participation (email: yum@kidscooktocare.com) in the holiday Cookies To Care Project and they will provide you with a cookie recipe from one of the celebrity chefs. You can bake your own cookies at home with friends and family. KCTC will also provide you with fun cultural information about the traditions of the country your recipe originates from so you can learn as you bake!
3. Deliver your cookies as a family to a place you know will appreciate the gesture (community centre, shelter, seniors’ nursing home, seniors or moms’ church group, sister school etc)
4. Then send KCTC a photo or video of your experience and you’ll be featured on KCTC’s facebook page in recognition of your acts of kindness.
It’s the little gestures that can mean so much to others and this initiative is easy for families to do on their own or even as a class holiday project.
